The Greek and Hebrew that is translated as “high priest” in English is translated in the following ways:

  • Yatzachi Zapotec: “the ruler of the priests of our nation”
  • Chol: “very great priest” (source for this and above: M. Larson / B. Moore in Notes on Translation February 1970, p. 1-125.)
  • Ayutla Mixtec: “first over the priests”
  • Desano: “chief of the priests” (source for this and one above: Viola Waterhouse in Notes on Translation August 1966, p. 86ff.).
  • Uma: “Big Priest” (source: Uma Back Translation)
  • Western Bukidnon Manobo: “high sacrificer” (source: Western Bukidnon Manobo Back Translation)
  • Tagbanwa as “Most-important Priest of God” (source: Tagbanwa Back Translation)
  • Bariai: “Big leader of offerings” (source: Bariai Back Translation)

In Khoekhoe the translation for “high priest” is only capitalized when it refers to Jesus (as is Hebrews 2:17 et al.). (Source: project-specific notes in Paratext)

obedience / obey

The Hebrew, Aramaic, Latin, and Greek that is translated in English typically as “obedience” or “obey” is translated in Tepeuxila Cuicatec as “thing hearing,” because “to hear is to obey.” (Source: Marjorie Davis in The Bible Translator 1952, p. 34ff. )

In Huba it is translated as hya nǝu nyacha: “follow (his) mouth.” (Source: David Frank in this blog post )

In Central Mazahua it is translated as “listen-obey” and in Huehuetla Tepehua as “believe-obey” (source: Waterhouse / Parrott in Notes on Translation October 1967, p. 1ff.), and in Noongar as dwangka-don, lit. “hear do” (source: Portions of the Holy Bible in the Nyunga language of Australia, 2018).

Judah, Judea

The name that is transliterated as “Judah” or “Judea” in English (referring to the son of Jacob, the tribe, and the territory) is translated in Spanish Sign Language as “lion” (referring to Genesis 49:9 and Revelation 5:5). Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 10:38

Both Revised Standard Version and Good News Bible have a paragraph break here, which we recommend.

As for the three districts that have been added to Judea from the country of Samaria: See verse 30. The tense of the Greek verb rendered have been added indicates a past action. As we have interpreted it, the action of annexing this territory was taken in verse 30, although translators could continue to use the present tense here by saying “The three districts of Samaria that I am adding to Judea from Samaria.”

Let them be so annexed to Judea that they are considered to be under one ruler and obey no other authority but the high priest: Again, King Demetrius passes an opportunity to name Jonathan. He cannot grant legitimacy to Alexander’s act of appointing Jonathan as High Priest. He prefers to pretend not to know about that. Good News Bible expresses this last half of the verse well and with the appropriate legal tone. Other possibilities are “are to be considered part of Judea itself; they will be under the authority of the High Priest alone” and “you will consider to be part of Judea itself. The High Priest will control them.”
