leaven

The Greek and Hebrew that is translated as “leaven” (or “yeast”) in English is translated in Tzotzil as “the thing that swells the stomach of bread,” in Mairasi as “bread cooking ingredient” (source: Enggavoter 2004), and in Toposa as “dried grain sprouts” (a fermenting agent made of dried grain sprouts that is mixed with flour in beer production — if, however, the “yeast of the Pharisees” is in focus, such as in Luke 12:1, the translation is more explicit with “the deceitfulness of the Pharisees.”) (source: Schröder 2026, p. 121).

In the occurrences in Mark 8:15 it is translated in Wantoat as “salt.” (Source: Ronald D. Olson in Notes on Translation January, 1968, p. 15ff.)
