Jesus looked around at all the people and said to the disciples: “All these people have been with us for three days and they have no food, it’s all gone.

“The houses in which they live are far away and if we say goodbye to them they will go walking and they will fall over being dizzy from hunger, I feel sorry for these poor people.”

The disciples said: “It’s desert here, there is no food. How and where are we going to find bread to hand out?”

Jesus said: “How much bread is there?” The disciples: “There are seven loaves.”

Jesus said to the people: “Please, sit down.” Jesus took bread and gave thanks to God, then he broke the bread and put it in a basket, he kept breaking and putting it there until it was full, then he gave the basket to the disciples and they took it and handed it out.

There were some small fishes, a few, and Jesus blessed them and there was a heap. He gave the basket (to the disciples): “You hand them out.” The disciples took the basket and handed them out.

All the people, there were more or less 4000, ate until they were full and the disciples put the fishes and the bread that were left over in baskets. When a basket was full, they would put it aside and take another one and fill it, and there were seven baskets of leftovers.

Jesus said goodbye and Jesus and the disciples went and got into a boat and the boat left.

Many people had gathered to listen to Jesus. Jesus was teaching the people. But the people did not have any food with them. Jesus said to his disciples:

— I feel sorry for these people! They have been here with me for three days, but they have no food. If I let the people go hungry, some will become weak on the long journey.

The disciples began to say:

— It’s a desert here! Where are we going to get so much bread to feed such a crowd? We won’t be able to.

Jesus said:

— Maybe some of you have some bread. Look and see if you can find some. The disciples looked and found seven loaves.

Jesus asked all the people to sit down on the ground. He took the bread in his hands and began to pray to God by saying, “Thank you, God!” Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. And the disciples went to distribute the bread to the people. There were also a few fish.

Jesus took the fish, looked up to heaven, said the prayer, “Thank you, God” and gave the disciples to distribute the fish to all the people.

There were about four thousand people in all who ate and had enough to eat.

Jesus said to the disciples:

— Gather the leftover pieces of food into baskets.

The disciples went to gather the leftovers, and there were seven baskets full of leftovers. When the people had eaten, Jesus let the people go, and he and his disciples got on a boat and sailed to the region of Dalmanutha.

Собралось множество людей, чтобы послушать Иисуса. Иисус учил народ. Но у людей не было с собой еды. Иисус сказал своим ученикам:

Translation commentary on Mark 8:8 – 8:9

Text:

In v. 9 after ēsan de ‘and there were’ Textus Receptus adds hoi phagontes ‘those who ate,’ which is omitted by all modern editions of the Greek text.
Verse Division:

Revised Standard Version ends v. 9 at tetrakischilioi ‘four thousand’; in most modern additions of the Greek text, and translations, the verse includes, however, also the next sentence kai apelusen autous ‘and he sent them away.’ These notes will follow the Revised Standard Version division of verses.

Exegesis:

echortasthēsan (cf. 6.42) ‘they were filled.’

perisseumata klasmatōn ‘excesses of fragments,’ ‘remaining pieces’: as in 6.43 those are pieces of bread left over, uneaten, from the abundance available to the crowd.

perisseuma (only here in Mark) ‘that which abounds,’ ‘which is in excess’: therefore, ‘remaining,’ ‘left over.’

klasma (cf. 6.43) ‘piece,’ ‘broken piece.’

hepta spuridas ‘seven baskets’: these two words are in apposition to perisseumata klasmatōn ‘remaining pieces.’

spuris (or sphuris; 8.20) ‘basket,’ ‘hamper (for provisions)’: wherein it differed from kophinos ‘basket’ cf. 6.43.

Translation:

Satisfied may be translated as ‘they had all they wanted.’

Seven baskets full is in an awkward syntactic relationship to what precedes. It is probably better to treat this as ‘took up seven baskets full of broken pieces which were left over’ or ‘they took up the broken pieces that were left over; there were seven baskets full of these pieces.’ In other words, the final phrase may be incorporated completely within the preceding clause or it may be expanded in to the form of a complete paratactic sentence.

For details of problems involving the manner in which the pieces were taken up and the nature of the baskets, see 6.43.

Note that whereas 6.44 specifically states ‘five thousand men,’ this passage speaks of ‘four thousand persons.’ Even though the Greek numeral has a masculine declensional ending, this does not mean that only males are to be considered. They are presumably people of all types: men, women, and children.

8:8a

The people ate: The Greek word that the Berean Standard Bible translates as The people ate is literally “they ate.” Use a natural subject in your language.

Here are some other ways to translate this:

ate and were satisfied: The word satisfied indicates that the people ate all the food they wanted to eat.

8:8b

and: The Greek conjunction that the Berean Standard Bible translates as and here introduces what happened next in the story. The New Century Version translates it as “Then” and the New International Version translates it as “Afterward.” Connect 8:8b to 8:8a in a way that is natural in your language.

the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over: The Greek clause that the Berean Standard Bible translates as the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over is literally “there was an abundance of pieces, seven baskets.” This clause refers to the pieces of bread and fish that were left after the crowd ate. It emphasizes how much food Jesus had provided for the people.

The Berean Standard Bible has supplied the phrase the disciples picked up to indicate how the baskets were filled.

Here are some other ways to translate this:

basketfuls: The type of basket that the Greek text refers to here is larger than the baskets that are mentioned in 6:43. Use an expression here that refers to large baskets. For example:

of broken pieces that were left over: The broken pieces refer to pieces of bread and fish that the people did not eat. They were not crumbs. See how you translated broken pieces in 6:43.
