Living Water is produced for the Bible translation movement in association with Lutheran Bible Translators. Lyrics derived from the ESV® Bible (The Holy Bible, English Standard Version®).
And the report of this went (Jerusalem Bible “And the news spread…”) may need to be restructured so as to indicate who spread the news, “People began to spread the news about this” or “People began to tell (each other) about this.”
All that district (Good News Translation “that part of the country”) hints that the author did not live there at the time of his writing. District can be “region” or “area.”
Quoted with permission from Newman, Barclay M. and Stine, Philip C. A Handbook on the Gospel of Matthew. (UBS Handbook Series). New York: UBS, 1988. For this and other handbooks for translators see here .
This verse gives a summary of the results of this healing. People told the story of this miracle throughout the whole region. Some languages have a special way of introducing this type of result at the end of a true story. For example:
And the result is that this news spread…
-or-
And so the news of this spread…
And the news about this spread: The word this refers to the miracle of raising the dead girl. People told others about this miracle so that people throughout a large area heard about it.
Here are some other ways to translate this clause:
News of this spread (New International Version)
-or-
The report of this miracle swept (New Living Translation (2004))
-or-
People told others about this miracle
throughout that region: The Greek word that the Berean Standard Bible translates as region also means “land, district.” It probably refers to the district of Galilee.
Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:
through all that district (English Standard Version)
-or-
through the entire countryside (New Living Translation (2004))
