The Hebrew that is either transliterated as “Anakim” or translated as “giants” in English is translated in Manya as “big, amazing people.” (Source: Don Slager)

Judah, Judea

The name that is transliterated as “Judah” or “Judea” in English (referring to the son of Jacob, the tribe, and the territory) is translated in Spanish Sign Language as “lion” (referring to Genesis 49:9 and Revelation 5:5). Joshua

The Hebrew, Latin, and Greek that is transliterated as “Joshua” is translated in Swiss-German Sign Language with a sign that depicts a trumpet of rams’ horn, referring to Joshua 6:4 and following.

Following are a number of back-translations as well as a sample translation for translators of Joshua 11:21:

  • Kupsabiny: “Then Joshua went ahead and destroyed other people who were called Anakites who lived in Hebron, Debir, Anab and the highlands of Judah and Israel. All those people were destroyed with their cities.” (Source: Kupsabiny Back Translation)
  • Newari: “At that time Joshua, having gone to the hill country, destroyed the Anakites who live in the hill country of Hebron, Debir, Anab, and in the whole hill country of Judah and Israel. Joshua totally destroyed them along with their cities.” (Source: Newari Back Translation)

Translation commentary on Joshua 11:21

Joshua went and destroyed may be better rendered as “Joshua also destroyed,” since in Hebrew the use of the verb went (Revised Standard Version “came”) in such a context indicates continuation of action rather than movement.

With less complication than Good News Translation, the object of destroyed may be translated, “… the race of giants called the Anakim who lived in the cities of Hebron, Debir, Anab, and in all the rest of the hill country of Judah and Israel.” Or, “… Anakim. They lived in the cities of….” Either of these proposals would avoid the complications involved with the use of a dash.

The race of giants wiped out by Joshua are called the Anakim, that is, the descendants of Anak (see Num 13.33); and for the other names used of the Canaanite giants, see Deuteronomy 2.10-11. Of the places mentioned in the highlands of the south, Hebron and Debir are already known (see 10.36-39); Anab is located about 8 kilometers southeast of Debir. Again the verb completely destroyed is used.

Judah and Israel refer to the southern and the northern parts of the country.

Paragraph 11:21–22

11:21a

At that time Joshua proceeded: The Hebrew verb proceeded indicates continuation of action, rather than movement. Some English versions leave this verb untranslated, for example:

Now Joshua fought… (New Century Version)

At that time: The phrase At that time indicates an indefinite time. It is close to the same time that Joshua and his army finished fighting the other enemy soldiers.

Some other ways to translate this phrase are:

During this period (New Living Translation (2004))

At this time (Good News Translation)

to eliminate: The Hebrew verb that the Berean Standard Bible translates as to eliminate indicates that Joshua and his army killed all the Anakim.

the Anakim: The Anakim were a group of people who were descendants of Anak. The descendants of Anak were first referred to in Numbers 13:22–33. At that time the Israelites were afraid of the Anakim and refused to enter the promised land. They did not trust Yahweh, and so they had to walk through the wilderness for forty years. Now the Israelites killed the Anakim.

from the hill country: The term hill country indicates the central mountain range of the land of Israel. This is the same phrase used in 9:1 and you should translate it the same way that you did there.

11:21b

of Hebron: Joshua destroyed the town of Hebron in 10:36–37. Hebron was in the hill country of Judah, 32 kilometers southwest of Jerusalem.

Debir: Joshua destroyed the town of Debir in 10:38–39. Debir was 14 kilometers southwest of Hebron, in the hill country of Judah.

and Anab: Anab was a village in the hill country of Judah. Anab was 19 kilometers southwest of Hebron.

11:21c

and from all the hill country of Judah: The hill country of Judah indicates the central mountain range in the southern part of the land of Israel.

and of Israel: The and of Israel indicates the mountains in the northern part of the country.

It may be clearer to combine these two phrases into one. For example:

11:21d

Joshua devoted them to destruction, along with their cities: The phrase with their cities indicates that Joshua destroyed the Anakim people, and also the towns in which they lived.
