Like a number of other East Asian languages, Japanese uses a complex system of honorifics, i.e. a system where a number of different levels of politeness are expressed in language via words, word forms or grammatical constructs. These can range from addressing someone or referring to someone with contempt (very informal) to expressing the highest level of reference (as used in addressing or referring to God) or any number of levels in-between.

One way Japanese shows different degree of politeness is through the usage of an honorific construction where the morpheme are (され) is affixed on the verb as shown here in the widely-used Japanese Shinkaiyaku (新改訳) Bible of 2017. This is particularly done with verbs that have God as the agent to show a deep sense of reverence. Here, hanas-are-ru (話される) or “speak” is used.

Translation commentary on John 8:30

For the first part of this verse the Greek text has “as he was saying these things.” In this summary verse, as in verse 20, Good News Translation makes the pronominal reference (“he” = Jesus) explicit for stylistic reasons. It also reverses the order of the two clauses as they appear in Greek (see Revised Standard Version, for example, “As he spoke thus, many believed in him”).

As Jesus spoke these things, many believed in Him: This verse implies that it was many of those who heard Jesus speak who believed in him. So in some languages it may be natural to say that explicitly:

many who heard him say these things believed in him (New Living Translation (2004))

believed in Him: This phrase includes the idea of believing the facts about who Jesus was and what he did. But it also includes the idea of trusting Jesus instead of trusting oneself or someone else. Both ideas are very closely related. If someone believes the facts about Jesus, it should result in trusting him. See how you translated similar phrases in 1:12b, 7:31a, and 7:38a. Here are other ways to translate this idea:

put their faith in him (Contemporary English Version)
-or-
believed on him
-or-
trusted in him

General Comment on 8:30

In some languages it may be natural to reverse the order of the clauses in this verse. For example:

many believed in him as he said these things

many believed in him while they listened to what he said
