Jesus came to the Lake of Galilee again. Many people followed Jesus. Jesus was teaching the people and there were more and more people. There were so many people that Jesus didn’t even have anywhere to stand. He was by a lake. There was a boat on the lake. Jesus got into the boat and the people crowded on the shore to listen to Jesus’ words. Jesus began to speak. He taught the people in parables.

Jesus said:

— Listen! There was a sower who sowed seeds. The seeds went to different places. The first place. There was a road nearby. Some of the seeds fell on the road. Birds saw them, flew in, pecked them all up.

Second place: rocky soil. A little bit of earth on top, mostly rocks. The seeds that fell here sprouted a little, but they couldn’t take root because the rocks were in the way. And then the sun came up, it got hot, and the sprouts dried up. The third place is where a lot of weeds grew. The seeds that fell here sprouted, but the weeds killed them, and they could not grow, but withered. The fourth place: good soil. The seeds that fell here grew and gave a bountiful harvest. Some yielded 30 times as much, some 60 times as much, and some 100 times as much. Those of you who ponder this will understand.

One of Jesus’ disciples named John said to Jesus:

— Teacher! We saw a man using your name to cast demons out of people. This man is not part of our circle, so we have forbidden him to do this.

Jesus said:

— Do not forbid him! If a person does miracles in my name, he will not speak ill of me. If a person is not against us, then he is for us. And if a person gives you drink because you are my disciples, I tell you for sure, God will reward him.

The chief priests, elders, and scribes were judges, and they deliberated. Early in the morning, when it was light, they made a decision. What was it? They had to bring Jesus to Pilate. That was what they decided among themselves. Pilate was the Roman governor of Judea. They took Jesus, tied his hands, and led him to where Pilate was. The chief priests were gathered there. Jesus stood before them. Pilate asked Jesus:

— Are you the king of the Jews?

Jesus answered:

— You yourself say that I am the king of the Jews.

The chief priests began to get angry. They began to accuse Jesus of crimes. Pilate, after listening, asked Jesus again:

— Why are you silent, why don’t you say anything? Look how many accusations there are against you.

But Jesus said nothing, he simply remained silent. Pilate was very surprised.

This was the beginning of the Passover holiday. According to tradition, every year at this time the people could ask Pilate to release one prisoner. At this time, there was a man named Bar-Abba in prison, as well as accomplices in his crimes. Earlier, Bar-Abba had rebelled against the Romans and committed murder. Therefore, he was put in prison. The people, according to tradition, came and began to ask Pilate to release Bar-Abba. Pilate realized that this was what the high priests had ordered. They had handed Jesus over to trial out of envy. Pilate realized this and said to the people:

— Here is Jesus, who is the king of the Jews, perhaps you want me to release him?

But the high priests began to incite the people to ask specifically for the release of Bar-Abba. Pilate said:

— And Jesus, whom you call the king of the Jews, what do you want me to do with him? And the people began to shout that Jesus should be crucified.

Pilate said:

— What did Jesus do wrong?

But the people began to shout even louder that Jesus must be crucified. And then Pilate ordered that Bar-Abba be released, and that Jesus be beaten with whips and crucified on the cross.

The city of Capernaum. Here is the city of Nazareth. This is where Jesus lived and grew up in. Jesus and his disciples came from Capernaum to Nazareth. It was a Sabbath day. There in Nazareth there is a synagogue where the Jews gather. Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. He taught and taught and taught. The people listened to him and marveled:

— We know that Jesus is a former carpenter, he is an ordinary man. His mother is Mary, he has four brothers: James, Joses, Judas, Simon. He also has several sisters. How does he have so much wisdom? How can he teach like that? It can’t be like that!

Some said:

— We heard that Jesus healed people in different towns and places.

Others said:

— That can’t be!

And the people did not believe Jesus.

Jesus looked at them and said:

— It has happened before! God had chosen a prophet. People in different places believed him. But the people from the town where the prophet grew up, his relatives, friends — they did not believe the prophet. It is the same now.

Jesus could not perform a miracle in this place. Only some sick people Jesus healed. Jesus went out and went to different villages. In different places he taught the people.

There was a man who had leprosy. His whole face and body was disfigured. He was not allowed to go out with people because the disease was very contagious. The man was wandering alone. Then Jesus passed by. The man began to beg Jesus with weeping, went up to him, fell on his knees and said to him:

— You heal people, make them healthy. Please heal me and make me well! I beg you! You can heal me!

Jesus looked at him and said:

— I want to give you health.

Jesus stretched out his hand. The leper tearfully touched his outstretched hand and, miraculously, his body and face began to change. Hooray! He was well!

Jesus said to him:

— I warn you sternly! Don’t tell anyone about this healing. Only go to Jerusalem, to the Temple, where the priests are. Go to the priest and show yourself to him. The priest will examine you and confirm that you are well. You must fulfill Moses’ instructions exactly, go there.

Leper:

— Yes, yes, of course!

He stood up out of joy that he was well. And he went around saying to everyone he met:

— I am well, I am clean. Jesus has healed me.

And so Jesus couldn’t go into the city. He began to look for deserted places. But people from all over Galilee came to Jesus, gathered around him in crowds and followed him.

Jesus said to his disciples:

— This time of suffering will end, and then throughout the universe the sun will go out, and the moon will go out, and the stars will fall down, and the heavens will tremble. All over the earth people will see the Son of Man descending from heaven, in glory and radiance, and with him a mighty host of angels. I will command the angels: “You, angels, go to earth and gather those whom God has chosen.”

Angels will descend and gather those whom God has chosen from all over the earth.

When Jesus had finished teaching and the crowd had left, the twelve closest disciples and the other disciples remained with him. The disciples looked at each other in confusion, then turned to Jesus:

— We do not understand. You teach much, but we cannot understand the meaning of your parables.

Jesus said:

— You are my disciples. God will reveal to you the mystery of his kingdom. You will understand. I have strangers flocking to me. I teach them, tell them parables, examples, images, explain to them. But they don’t understand. They look, but as if their eyes were closed. They have ears, they listen, but they miss everything. If they would turn their eyes to God, if they would change their lives, then they would understand. And then God would forgive their sins.

Jesus said to his disciples:

— There are simple people who believe in me. And if anyone leads such people astray, saying to them, “Sin!”, there will be a very severe punishment for that person!

There is such a punishment: a big stone is tied to the neck and a person is thrown into the water, and there he drowns. For that person, the punishment will be even worse!

If your hand likes sin and is drawn to sin, it is better to cut off your hand! Then you can go to eternal life in heaven. But if you pity the hand that leads you to sin, then you will go to hell, to the lake of fire, where fire burns all the time.

If your foot likes sin and goes to sin, it is better to cut off that foot. It is better with one foot to go to eternal life in heaven. But if you pity the foot that leads you to sin, you will fall into the lake of fire, where fire burns all the time.

If your eye likes to look at sin, you had better pluck it out. With one eye you will go to eternal life. But if you pity the eye that tempts you, you will go into the lake of fire, where the fire never goes out. There worms never disappear and torment.

The meat of animals is sacrificed to God. This meat must be sprinkled with salt. For what purpose? For purification. In the same way, suffering and trials are like fire. Man must go through it. Why? To purify man.

Salt is a very important thing for God. If salt has lost its taste, how can you give it back its taste? So keep salt inside you, and live in peace with each other.
