obedience / obey

The Hebrew, Aramaic, Latin, and Greek that is translated in English typically as “obedience” or “obey” is translated in Tepeuxila Cuicatec as “thing hearing,” because “to hear is to obey.” (Source: Marjorie Davis in The Bible Translator 1952, p. 34ff. )

In Huba it is translated as hya nǝu nyacha: “follow (his) mouth.” (Source: David Frank in this blog post )

In Central Mazahua it is translated as “listen-obey” and in Huehuetla Tepehua as “believe-obey” (source: Waterhouse / Parrott in Notes on Translation October 1967, p. 1ff.), and in Noongar as dwangka-don, lit. “hear do” (source: Portions of the Holy Bible in the Nyunga language of Australia, 2018).

sanctuary

The Hebrew, Greek and Latin that is translated as “sanctuary” in English is translated in the Contemporary Chichewa translation (2002/2016) with opatulika or “separated place.” This is understood in a religious setup as a place designated for worship. Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 14:43

And that he should be obeyed by all may be rendered “(5) Everyone must obey him.”

And that all contracts in the country should be written in his name: This probably means that all legal documents should be dated with reference to the number of his years Simon had held office (see 1Macc 13.42). This clause may be rendered “(6)~All legal [or, official] documents in the country must mention him by name [or, be dated by the years of his high priesthood]” or “(6)~People must write his name on all legal [or, official] documents in Judea.”

And that he should be clothed in purple and wear gold: See 1Macc 10.20, 89; 11.58. Good News Bible introduces here the gold buckle from 1Macc 11.58, which is justified by the next verse. This clause may be rendered “(7)~He shall have the right to wear purple robes with the gold shoulder buckle.”

An alternative model for this verse is:

• (4) He will be in charge of the Temple.
(5) Everyone must obey him.
(6) People must write his name on all legal documents in Judea.
(7) He shall have the right to wear purple robes with the gold shoulder buckle.
