SIL Translator’s Notes on Judges 14:16

14:16a Then Samson’s wife came to him, weeping, and said,

Then Samson’s wife went to him crying. She said,

So Samson’s wife/bride wept in front of Samson.

14:16b “You hate me! You do not really love me!

“You only hate me. You do not love me.
-or-
“Truly you hate me. You do not love me.
-or-
“You must not love me at all.

14:16c You have posed to my people a riddle, but have not explained it to me.”

You asked the young men of my people a riddle. But you have not told me the answer.”

You gave my countrymen a riddle to solve and you have not told me the solution.”

14:16d “Look,” he said, “I have not even explained it to my father or mother,

He answered, “Look, I have not told it to my father or to my mother.

Samson replied, “I have not even told my own father or my mother about it.

14:16e so why should I explain it to you?”

So will/should I tell you?”

I certainly will not tell you.”

16:8a So the lords of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried,

The rulers of Philistia brought her seven new bowstrings that were not yet dry.

The rulers of the Philistia people gave Delilah the seven (7) new strings for a bow. They had not been dried.

16:8b and she tied him up with them.

She tied Samson with the bowstrings.
-or-
She tied Samson with them ⌊while he was asleep⌋ .

17:9a “Where are you from?” Micah asked him.

Micah asked him, “Where do you (sing.) come from?”

Micah asked him where he was from.

17:9b “I am a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah,” he replied,

He answered, “I am a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah.
-or-
He said he was a Levi person who had been living in Bethlehem in the land of Judah,

17:9c “and I am on my way to settle wherever I can find a place.”

I am looking for a place to live.”

and that he was looking for another place to live.

18:28a There was no one to deliver them,

Nobody was there to save them

No other people came to their rescue.

18:28b because the city was far from Sidon

because they lived far away from Sidon.

18:28c and had no alliance with anyone;

And they had no friends in any another town.

18:28d it was in a valley near Beth-rehob.

Laish was in a valley near Beth Rehob.

18:28e And the Danites rebuilt the city and lived there.

The clan of Dan rebuilt the town and made it their home.

19:29a When he reached his house, he picked up a knife, took hold of his concubine, cut her limb by limb

When he got there he used a knife to cut her body in pieces.

Once he arrived home, he took out his knife and cut the arms and legs off her body.

19:29b into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout the territory of Israel.

He divided it into twelve parts and sent them to all the ⌊twelve clan⌋ areas in the land of Israel.

He split her body into twelve pieces and sent ⌊one piece⌋ to each area where the Israel people lived.

20:31a The Benjamites came out against them and were drawn away from the city.

Then the Benjamin people came out of the town to fight the Israel people.

The men of Benjamin came out to fight. They went far away from the town.

20:31b They began to attack the people as before,

They began to kill the Israel people as they had done ⌊on the previous days⌋ .

They began to kill the soldiers of Israel. They did as they had done on the other days.

20:31c killing about thirty men of Israel in the fields and on the roads,

About thirty Israel men died in the field and along the roads.

There were about thirty Israel soldiers who died. They died in the open land and in the roads

20:31d one of which led up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah.

One of the roads went to Bethel town and the other went to Gibeah town.

that went to the towns of Bethel and Gibeah.

21:15a The people grieved for Benjamin,

The Israel people felt sorry for the Benjamin clan

The people of Israel were sad about ⌊what had happened to⌋ the clan of Benjamin

21:15b because the LORD had made a void in the tribes of Israel.

because Yahweh had made an empty place among the ⌊twelve⌋ clans of Israel.
-or-
and what Yahweh had done to them. One of the clans of Israel had disappeared.

1:11 From there they marched against the inhabitants of Debir (formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).

From there they attacked the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher).
