SIL Translator’s Notes on Judges 1:14

1:14a One day Acsah came to Othniel

One day after they were married
-or-
After Aksah had married Othniel

1:14b and urged him to ask her father for a field.

Aksah urged her husband to ask Caleb her father for a piece of farmland.
-or-
she said to her husband, “You must ask my father for a piece of land.”

1:14c When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her,

⌊Then Aksah went to visit Caleb her father.⌋ When she got off her donkey Caleb asked her,
-or-
⌊She went to see her father Caleb.⌋ After she got down from her donkey, her father asked her

1:14d “What do you desire?”

“What do you want?”

what she wanted.

2:10a After that whole generation had also been gathered to their fathers,

The whole generation of Joshua also died and went to be with their ancestors.
-or-
All those people of Joshua’s time died.

2:10b another generation rose up who did not know the LORD or the works that He had done for Israel.

Another generation came after them. These people did not know Yahweh. They did not remember the mighty things he had done for Israel.
-or-
A new generation replaced them who had no personal experience with Yahweh. They forgot about the deeds that he had done for the people of Israel.

3:19a But upon reaching the idols near Gilgal, he himself turned back and said,

But when Ehud reached the gods made of stone near Gilgal he turned and came back to the king. He said,

⌊Ehud left with them,⌋ but when he came near the stone idols that were near Gilgal, he went back to King Eglon and said to him:

3:19b “I have a secret message for you, O king.”

“I have a secret message to tell you, my king.”
-or-
“Oh king, I need to talk with you in private.”

3:19c “Silence,” said the king,

The king ordered his servants to leave
-or-
The king then told his officials to leave him

3:19d and all his attendants left him.

and they all went out.

and they all left.

4:20a “Stand at the entrance to the tent,” he said,

He told her, “Go and stand (sing.) at the entrance of the tent.

General Sisera said to her, “Stay at the door of the tent.

4:20b “and if anyone comes and asks you, ‘Is there a man here?’ say, ‘No.’”

If anyone asks you if there is anyone here, you will answer, ‘No one is here.’”
-or-
If anyone comes and asks you if anyone is here, say no.”

5:28a Sisera’s mother looked through the window;

Through the window Sisera’s mother was watching.

Sisera’s mother looked out the window.

5:28b she peered through the lattice and lamented:

From behind the lattice she called,

She looked through the lattice-work and cried,

5:28c ‘Why is his chariot so long in coming?

‘Why is his chariot so late in appearing?
-or-
‘My son’s chariot has not come back.

5:28d What has delayed the clatter of his chariots?

Why don’t we hear the noise of his chariots?’
-or-
Why is that? His chariot is very late.’

6:29a “Who did this?” they said to one another.

They asked one another, “Who did this?”

Then they said one another, “Who has done this?”

6:29b And after they had investigated thoroughly,

After a careful search

When they asked everybody,

6:29c they were told, “Gideon son of Joash did it.”

they were told, “Gideon the son of Joash did it.”
-or-
they found out that it was Joash’s son Gideon who did it.

7:21a Each Israelite took his position around the camp,

Each man stood where he was around the camp.

The Israel soldiers stood around the camp, each one in his place.

7:21b and the entire Midianite army fled, crying out as they ran.

The Midian soldiers all started running, shouting and fleeing.
-or-
All the soldiers of Midian started to run. They cried out as they ran away.

SIL Translator’s Notes on Judges 8:28

8:28a In this way Midian was subdued before the Israelites

So the Midian people could not attack the Israel people again.
-or-
⌊That is how⌋ the people of Israel defeated the people of Midian.

8:28b and did not raise its head again.

They did not recover from this defeat.
-or-
The people of Midian did not become strong again.

8:28c So the land had rest for forty years in the days of Gideon,

As long as Gideon lived, for another forty years, the land was at peace.

From then until Gideon died there was peace for forty (40) years.
