17:6a In those days there was no king in Israel;

18:25a The Danites said to him, “Do not raise your voice against us,

The men from Dan answered, “Watch what you (sing.) say

Then the soldiers of Dan said, “Do not argue with us.

18:25b or angry men will attack you,

or some of our men may get angry ⌊enough⌋ to attack you.

Some of our soldiers may get angry and fight

18:25c and you and your family will lose your lives.”

You and your family will die.”

19:26a Early that morning, the woman went back to the house where her master was staying,

When the sun was rising the woman returned to the house where her master had passed the night.

19:26b collapsed at the doorway, and lay there until it was light.

⌊When she got there,⌋ she collapsed at the door and lay there until daytime.

20:28b The Israelites asked, “Should we again go out to battle against our brothers the Benjamites, or should we stop?”

The people asked, “Should we (excl.) go and fight the Benjamin people again? Or should we stay home?”

They asked God if they should go and fight the people of Benjamin again the next day.

20:28c The LORD answered, “Fight, for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”

Then Yahweh answered them, “Go (plur.) ⌊and fight them⌋ tomorrow. I will help you to win.”

Yahweh told them that they should go and fight because they would defeat the Benjamin people tomorrow.

21:12a So they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young women who had not had relations with a man,

In Jabesh Gilead town the warriors found four hundred young women who had never had sex with a man.

So the fighters allowed four hundred (400) young women of Jabesh Gilead to live. They were women who had never had relations with a man.

21:12b and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan.

They brought them to the camp in Shiloh town in the land of Canaan.

They took these women back to the camp in the land of Canaan near the town of Shiloh.

SIL Translator’s Notes on Judges 1:29

1:29a Ephraim also failed to drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer;

The clan of Ephraim could not force the people of Canaan who lived in Gezer to leave.

⌊The same thing happened to⌋ the descendants of Ephraim. They were not able to defeat the people of Canaan who lived in the town of Gezer. They could not send them away.

1:29b so the Canaanites continued to dwell among them in Gezer.

So the people of Ephraim and the people of Canaan continued to live together.

These people of Canaan stayed in the same land with the clan of Ephraim.

SIL Translator’s Notes on Judges 3:2

3:2 if only to teach warfare to the subsequent generations of Israel, especially to those who had not known it formerly:

Yahweh did this only to teach Israel how to fight their enemies, because some of them had not fought in any battles.

The only reason Yahweh left them in the land was to teach the new generation of Israel people how to fight.

4:3a Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD

They called on Yahweh for help

4:3b because Jabin had nine hundred chariots of iron

because Sisera had nine hundred iron chariots,

4:3c and he had harshly oppressed the Israelites for twenty years.
