SIL Translator’s Notes on Judges 3:10

3:10a The Spirit of the LORD came upon him,

The spirit of Yahweh gave him power

The spirit of Yahweh took control of Othniel

3:10b and he became Israel’s judge and went out to war.

and he became the judge of Israel and led them in fighting.

and he became Israel’s leader and took them to war ⌊against Aram⌋ .

3:10c And the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram into the hand of Othniel, who prevailed against him.

Yahweh helped Othniel to fight Cushan-Rishathaim the king of Aram, and he defeated him.

Yahweh gave him complete victory over King Cushan-Rishathaim the king of Aram.

4:11a Now Heber the Kenite had moved away from the Kenites, the descendants of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses,

Near Kedesh lived Heber a Kenite person. He had left the other Kenites who were descendants of Hobab. Hobab was Moses’ brother-in-law.

There as a man called Heber of the Ken people, who were descended from Hobab the brother-in-law of Moses. Heber had separated from the other Ken people

4:11b and had pitched his tent by the great tree of Zaanannim, which was near Kedesh.

Heber had moved and set up his tent beside the great tree of Zaanannim.

and lived in his tent near Kedesh town, by the large tree of Zaanannim.

At that time there was a man called Heber who lived not far from the big tree at Zaanannim near Kadesh. He set up his tent there when he moved from ⌊the area of his relatives,⌋ the Ken people. He was a descendant of Hobab, the father-in-law of Moses.
