10:9a He asked them, “What message do you advise

He asked them, “What do you advise me

10:9b that we send back to these people

to tell these people?

10:9c who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”

They have said to me, ‘Lighten the heavy burdens that your father put on us.’”

10:10a The young men who had grown up with him replied,

10:10c ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you should make it lighter.’

‘My lightest burden will be more than my father’s heavy one.

10:11a Whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke,

My father placed heavy burdens on you.

10:11b I will add to your yoke.

10:11c Whereas my father scourged you with whips,

My father beat you with whips.

10:12a After three days, Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam,

On the third day Jeroboam and all the people came to King Rehoboam.

10:12b since the king had said, “Come back to me on the third day.”

The king had told them that they should come to him three days later.

10:15a So the king did not listen to the people,

The king did not listen to the people of Israel

10:15b and indeed this turn of events was from God,

because this is what God had decided.

10:15c in order that the LORD might fulfill the word that He had spoken

Yahweh made his prophecy come true. This was the prophecy that he gave to Jeroboam, Nebat’s son,

10:15d through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.

9:31a And Solomon rested with his fathers

Solomon died and was buried with his ancestors.

9:31b and was buried in the city of his father David.

He was buried in the city of King David, his father.

and his people buried him. They buried him in the part of Jerusalem called the City of David.

9:31c And his son Rehoboam reigned in his place.

His son Rehoboam replaced him as king.
