Judah, Judea

The name that is transliterated as “Judah” or “Judea” in English (referring to the son of Jacob, the tribe, and the territory) is translated in Spanish Sign Language as “lion” (referring to Genesis 49:9 and Revelation 5:5). Translation commentary on 2 Kings 8:24

Slept with his fathers: See the comments on 1 Kgs 1.21 and 2.10.

Was buried with his fathers: See the comments on 1 Kgs 14.31.

The city of David: See the comments on 1 Kgs 2.10.

Reigned in his stead: This is the same in Hebrew as the words translated “became king in his stead” in verse 15. In other languages it will be more natural to say something like “followed him as king.” See the comments on 1 Kgs 11.43.

8:24a And Jehoram rested with his fathers and was buried with them

Jehoram died and joined his ancestors.

Jehoram went to be with his ancestors in death.

8:24b in the City of David.

He was buried with his ancestors in the City of David.

His people buried his body with the bodies of his ⌊royal⌋ ancestors. ⌊This was in the part of Jerusalem called⌋ “The City of David.”

8:24c And his son Ahaziah reigned in his place.

His son Ahaziah took his place/position as king.

His son Ahaziah became the next king of Judah.
