Translation commentary on 1 Chronicles 4:16

This verse has no clear connection with what precedes or with what follows. Many versions, therefore, make a separate paragraph of this verse (so Good News Translation, Bible en français courant, Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch, Reina-Valera revisada, Parola Del Signore: La Bibbia in Lingua Corrente, Nova Tradução na Linguagem de Hoje). Verses 17-20 also appear to be fragments of genealogy lists.

The sons of Jehallelel: As in some of the previous verses, Good News Translation makes explicit the number of sons, although the Hebrew text simply lists them.

Ziph: Another descendant of Caleb, perhaps a grandson, has this name in 1 Chr 2.42. It is not clear what relationship, if any, this Ziph has with the one mentioned in chapter 2. There are also several places in the territory of Judah named Ziph, but it is not known what relationship, if any, that any of those places may have to this person.

Ziphah: Although this person is called a son, the name Ziphah is a feminine form of the preceding name, Ziph. In light of this, it is possible that the name is not original to the text but was added when a scribe accidentally repeated the name “Ziph.” But the name is firmly established in the Masoretic Text and should be translated.
