SIL Translator’s Notes on Haggai 2:15

2:15a Now consider carefully from this day forward:

But now, consider (plur.) what will happen about this from this day on.
-or-
Now then, look carefully at what is happening to you from this day on.

2:15b Before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the LORD,

Also consider what was happening to you (plur.) before one stone was put on another in the temple of Yahweh.
-or-
And reflect carefully about what has happened to you before you started to rebuild the temple of Yahweh.

1:9a You expected much,

“You (plur.) looked for abundance,
-or-
“You (plur.) looked for ⌊a better harvest⌋ .

1:9b but behold, it amounted to little.

but it resulted in little.
-or-
However, look (plur.) ⌊what happened⌋ , very few crops!

1:9c And what you brought home, I blew away.

When you (plur.) brought ⌊crops⌋ home, I scattered them.
-or-
When you (plur.) brought ⌊in your crops⌋ , I caused them to spoil/ruin.”

1:9d Why? declares the LORD of Hosts.

Why ⌊did that happen⌋ ?” asked Yahweh Commander of heavenly armies.
-or-
Yahweh the completely powerful ⌊one⌋ says, “The reason that happened is that

1:9e Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.

⌊“It’s⌋ because of my Temple! It stands ruined, and you all are running after your own houses.
-or-
each one of you is only concerned with your own house, while my house is not yet rebuilt.

2:5a This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt.

‘This is the covenant I made with you (plur.) when you were freed from Egypt.

This ⌊promise that I will be with you⌋ , is what I promised you (plur.) when I freed you from ⌊your slavery⌋ in ⌊the country of⌋ Egypt.

2:5b And My Spirit remains among you; do not be afraid.”

Do not be afraid, ⌊because⌋ my Spirit abides in your (plur.) midst.’

And my presence stays with you. So do not be frightened.’

2:16a from that time, when one came expecting a heap of twenty ephahs of grain,

When someone went to a heap ⌊of grains⌋ expecting to find twenty measures,

At that time you (plur.) expected ⌊to harvest⌋ twenty bushels ⌊of crops ⌋ ,

2:16b there were but ten.

⌊they would⌋ only find ten.

2:16c When one came to the winepress to draw out fifty baths,

When someone went to a wine container to get fifty measures of wine,

2:16d there were but twenty.

1:10a Therefore, on account of you the heavens have withheld their dew

1:10b and the earth has withheld its crops.

2:6a For this is what the LORD of Hosts says:

Yahweh, Commander of heavenly armies said this:

Yahweh, the completely strong ⌊one⌋ declared,

2:6b “Once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.

‘Soon I will once again shake the sky and the earth, the oceans and the land.

‘In just a little while I will shake ⌊the entire world. This will include⌋ the heavens, the earth, the oceans and the land.

2:17a I struck you—all the work of your hands—with blight, mildew, and hail,

I sent hot winds, fungus disease, and hail storms, and they destroyed all your (plur.) crops.

I destroyed everything you worked hard ⌊to produce⌋ with scorching wind, fungus disease and hail storms.

2:17b but you did not turn to Me, declares the LORD.

Yet you (plur.) did not turn towards me,’ says Yahweh.
-or-
Even so, you refused to come back to me,’ said Yahweh.

SIL Translator’s Notes on Haggai 1:11

1:11a I have summoned a drought on the fields

I have caused no rain to fall on the land.
-or-
And I, ⌊Yahweh⌋ , have caused drought on the land.

1:11b and on the mountains, on the grain, new wine, and oil,

⌊This includes⌋ the hills, the seeds of cultivated cereals, the ⌊grape⌋ wine, the olive oil
-or-

⌊I have caused drought⌋ on the high places, the grain fields, the vineyards and olive fields.

1:11c and on whatever the ground yields,

and on all other ⌊crops⌋ the land yields.
-or-

⌊I have caused drought⌋ on all ⌊cultivation that⌋ grows in the field.

1:11d on man and beast, and on all the labor of your hands.”

⌊That drought affected⌋ human beings and animals, and all the work you put your hand to.”

And ⌊I have caused drought on⌋ both people and domestic animals ⌊so that they do not have enough food⌋ . And all your hard work produced nothing.”
