SIL Translator’s Notes on Haggai 1:9

1:9a You expected much,

“You (plur.) looked for abundance,
-or-
“You (plur.) looked for ⌊a better harvest⌋ .

1:9b but behold, it amounted to little.

but it resulted in little.
-or-
However, look (plur.)what happened⌋ , very few crops!

1:9c And what you brought home, I blew away.

When you (plur.) brought ⌊crops⌋ home, I scattered them.
-or-
When you (plur.) brought ⌊in your crops⌋ , I caused them to spoil/ruin.”

1:9d Why? declares the LORD of Hosts.

Why ⌊did that happen⌋ ?” asked Yahweh Commander of heavenly armies.
-or-
Yahweh the completely powerful ⌊one⌋ says, “The reason that happened is that

1:9e Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.

“It’s⌋ because of my Temple! It stands ruined, and you all are running after your own houses.
-or-
each one of you is only concerned with your own house, while my house is not yet rebuilt.
