SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 5:4

5:4a When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus

When you are gathered together in the name of our Lord Jesus
-or-
When you meet together ⌊to worship⌋ in the name of our Lord Jesus,

5:4b and I am with you in spirit,

and I am with you in my spirit/heart/mind,
-or-
and I am with you spiritually,

5:4c along with the power of the Lord Jesus,

our Lord Jesus will give us power to do what he wants us to do.
-or-
then our Lord Jesus will cause to happen what you/we agree to do.

7:3a The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife,

Each husband should have normal/intimate marriage relations with his wife,

A wife has the right to expect her husband to have sex with her. That is his duty to her.

A husband must not refuse to have relations with his wife. It is right/proper for him to make love to her.

7:3b and likewise the wife to her husband.

7:35a I am saying this for your own good,

I talk to you like this because I want to help you ⌊think about what is best for you.⌋

I have said these things to you because I think it will help you ⌊to decide for yourself what is best for you to do⌋.

7:35b not to restrict you,

I am not giving you commands you must obey.
-or-
I do not want to take away your freedom ⌊to decide what is best.⌋
-or-

⌊You are free to get married or stay single, and⌋ I do not want to limit you.

7:35c but in order to promote proper decorum

Rather, I want to help you to live in a way/manner that is appropriate/fitting,

On the contrary, I want to help you live/behave as the Lord’s people should live/behave.

7:35d and undivided devotion to the Lord.

so you can serve the Lord in the best way with nothing worrying/distracting you.
-or-
and so that you can work for the Lord without always having to think of other things you have to do.

9:14a In the same way, the Lord has prescribed that

9:14b those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.

10:19a Am I suggesting, then, that food sacrificed to an idol is anything,

What do I mean? I do not mean that a sacrifice ⌊people/pagans⌋ offer to an idol has any value/worth.

10:19b or that an idol is anything?

11:18a First of all, I hear that when you come together as a church,

To start with, people tell me that when you (plur.) meet as a church,

11:18b there are divisions among you,

you (plur.) separate into different groups/factions,

you argue with each other,

11:18c and in part I believe it.

and I believe this to be at least partly true.

12:16a And if the ear should say,

And if the ear says,

12:16b “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,”

it does not belong to the body because it is not an eye.

12:16c that would not make it any less a part of the body.

14:4a The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself,

The person who speaks in an unknown tongue strengthens himself,

14:4b but the one who prophesies edifies the church.
