SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 13:3

13:3a If I give all I possess to the poor

I may give all my belongings to poor people,
-or-
Somebody may give everything they have to others,

13:3b and exult in the surrender of my body,

(New International Version (1984)) and surrender my body to the flames,

and allow people to kill me by burning my body.
-or-
and they may be willing to be burnt to death ⌊for Christ⌋.

13:3c but have not love,

But if I do not love ⌊other people⌋,
-or-
But if that person does not have a heart of love,

13:3d I gain nothing.

there is no benefit for me.
-or-
they will not receive ⌊a reward⌋.

14:22a Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers, but for unbelievers.

So unknown tongues are a sign for unbelievers. They are not a sign for believers.

So when someone speaks in unknown/miraculous languages, it serves as a sign to unbelievers rather than to believers.

14:22b Prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.

But prophecy is ⌊a sign⌋ for believers rather than unbelievers.

But when someone declares God’s word, believers receive ⌊a sign⌋. Unbelievers do not.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 15:14

15:14a And if Christ has not been raised,

And if Christ has not risen,

And if Christ has not become alive again,

15:14b our preaching is worthless, and so is your faith.

our preaching and your (plur.) faith are both worthless.

it is useless for us (excl.) to preach ⌊the gospel⌋ to you, and it is useless for you to believe it.

15:46 The spiritual, however, was not first, but the natural, and then the spiritual.

The spiritual ⌊body⌋ did not come first, but the natural ⌊body⌋, and after that the spiritual ⌊body⌋.

In the beginning God gave people bodies for living in this world. In the future he will give them bodies for living in heaven.

16:20a All the brothers here send you greetings.

All the believers here want you (plur.) to know that they ask about you.

All the brothers and sisters say that they think about you.

16:20b Greet one another with a holy kiss.

Greet (plur.) one another with a kiss, as people who believe in Christ.

Greet each other by shaking hands/hugging/bowing because you are God’s holy people.
-or-
When you meet, greet each other with love because you are God’s holy people.
