SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 13:5

13:5a It is not rude, it is not self-seeking,

Love does not act in a way that is not proper. Love is not selfish.
-or-
If we love ⌊other people⌋, we respect them. We do not think only about what is good for ourselves.

13:5b it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs.

Love does not become angry quickly. It does not remember the wrong things that other people do.
-or-
If we love ⌊other people⌋, we are slow to get angry at them. We don’t count up the ways they have hurt us.

14:24a But if an unbeliever or uninstructed person comes in

But if someone who does not follow Christ or someone who is not taught joins them

Suppose, on the other hand, that an unbelieving or ordinary person enters

14:24b while everyone is prophesying,

while the believers are prophesying,
-or-
while you are all declaring God’s word.

14:24c he will be convicted and called to account by all,

everything ⌊he hears⌋ will convict and condemn him.

Everything ⌊that you say⌋ will cause him to realize that he is a sinner and to know that God will judge him.

15:16a For if the dead are not raised,

For if dead people do not rise,

For if he does not cause dead people to live again,

15:16b then not even Christ has been raised.

then even Christ has not risen.

15:48a As was the earthly man, so also are those who are of the earth;

People who belong to this earth have bodies like ⌊Adam⌋, the person made of earth.

Adam was made from the ground; his descendants are also made from the ground.

15:48b and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.

People who belong to heaven have bodies like ⌊Jesus⌋, the person from heaven.

Jesus has a body for living in heaven, and so do those who live in heaven ⌊with him⌋.

16:22a If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be under a curse.

If someone does not love the Lord, may God curse him.

May God punish with eternal punishment all those who do not love him.

16:22b Come, O Lord!

Come quickly, Lord.

Come back quickly to the earth, Lord!
