12:9a So King Shishak of Egypt attacked Jerusalem

When Shishak the king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem

King Shishak the king of Egypt ⌊and his army⌋ fought against Jerusalem ⌊and defeated them⌋.

12:9b and seized the treasures of the house of the LORD

he took away all the wealth from the temple of Yahweh,
-or-
They carried away the valuable things from the house of Yahweh,

12:9c and of the royal palace.

and the wealth of the king’s palace.
-or-
and the valuable things from the house of the king.

12:9d He took everything, including the gold shields that Solomon had made.

He removed all that was valuable, including the shields of gold that Solomon had made.

They took away everything. They even took the shields that King Solomon had made with gold.

In their place, King Rehoboam made bronze shields.

He gave them to the officers of the royal guards

12:11a And whenever the king entered the house of the LORD,

When the king went to the temple of Yahweh

12:11b the guards would go with him, bearing the shields,

the guards went too. They carried the shields ⌊to the temple⌋

the guards went with him, holding the shields.

12:11c and later they would return them to the guardroom.

12:12a Because Rehoboam humbled himself, the anger of the LORD turned away from him,

Because Rehoboam made himself humble, Yahweh abandoned his anger he had against him

King Rehoboam admitted that he was wrong. Because of that Yahweh was no longer angry with him.

12:12b and He did not destroy him completely.

and did not destroy ⌊his kingdom⌋.

This is why ⌊the kingdom of Judah⌋ was not destroyed.

12:12c Indeed, conditions were good in Judah.

Moreover, things went well in Judah.

Tell him, ‘Yahweh says this to you:

11:4b ‘You are not to go up and fight against your brothers.

Do not go to war against your own people/brothers.

Do not fight against the Israelites, your relatives.

11:4c Each of you must return home,

Return home, all of you,

Each of you must go back to his house.

11:4d for this word is from Me.’”

because I have caused this to happen.’”

What has happened is what I wanted to happen ⌊and you should not fight against it⌋.’”

11:4e So they listened to the words of the LORD

So they did as Yahweh said to them.

11:4f and turned back from going against Jeroboam.
