SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 2:2

2:2a and Elijah said to Elisha,

But Elijah said to Elisha,

-or-

But Elijah said to Elisha,

-or-

Then Elijah asked Elisha

2:2b “Please stay here,

“Please stay (sing.) here,

-or-

“You (sing.) should stop here.

-or-

to remain behind in ⌊Gilgal town

2:2c for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel.”

because Yahweh has sent me on to Bethel.”

-or-

Yahweh has told me to go ⌊further,⌋ to ⌊the town of⌋ Bethel.”

-or-

while he himself went on to Bethel ⌊town⌋ , as Yahweh had told him to do.

2:2b-c (reordered)

“Yahweh has told me to continue on to Bethel. I would like you (sing.) to stay here in Gilgal.”

2:2d But Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live,

But Elisha said, “As it is certain/true that Yahweh lives and that you (sing.) live,

-or-

Elisha replied, “I swear/promise, that as you (sing.) can be certain/sure that Yahweh lives and that you live,

-or-

But ⌊Elisha refused.⌋ He firmly/solemnly promised by Yahweh’s life and Elijah’s life that

2:2e I will not leave you.”

so ⌊it is certain/true that⌋ I will not leave you (sing.).”

-or-

so ⌊you (sing.) can be certain/sure that⌋ I will go/continue with you (sing.).”

-or-

he/Elisha would not part/separate from Elijah.

2:2f So they went down to Bethel.

So they went down to Bethel ⌊together⌋ .

-or-

So they ⌊both⌋ went/walked on to ⌊the town of⌋ Bethel.

-or-

And he went/continued on with Elijah to Bethel.
