Translation commentary on Joel 3:15

Verse 15 is exactly the same as the last two lines of 2.10 (see the comments there). However, here the cause of the darkness is not stated; in 2.10 the darkness was probably caused by the flying swarms of locusts.

Commentaire sur la traduction de Joël 3.15

La manifestation du Seigneur dans la Bible s’accompagne toujours de phénomènes cosmiques inhabituels, de signes étonnants, de prodiges. En fait, la description de Joël 2.10 revient ici, sous une autre forme.

Le soleil et la lune s’obscurcissent : même si les idées sont les mêmes, leur formulation est légèrement différente. Ici le soleil et la lune deviennent sombres. Autrement dit, ils ne brillent plus.

les étoiles retirent leur clarté : dans Joël 2.10 aucun commentaire n’a été fait sur les astres mineurs, les étoiles. La Traduction œcuménique de la Bible rend bien l’hébreu avec retirer, mais dans beaucoup de langues, les étoiles ne pourront pas d’elles-mêmes faire cette action. La Parole de Vie dit alors qu’elles « ne brillent plus », et plus près de l’hébreu, la Bible en français courant et le Bible de Jérusalem proposent que les étoiles « perdent leur éclat ». Dans certaines régions tropicales, lorsque les astres perdent tout d’un coup leur clarté et plongent la terre dans l’obscurité, c’est un très mauvais signe. Cela annonce l’arrivée d’un malheur, par exemple, un orage avec des conséquences redoutables : récoltes arrachées par le vent, arbres déracinés, maisons écroulées, toits enlevés, etc. Les traducteurs chercheront des expressions qui expriment brièvement et de manière poétique ces vers, par exemple :

Le soleil et la lune ne donnent plus leur lumière,
les étoiles ne brillent plus.

Les mêmes thèmes deviennent courants dans les écrits bibliques et réapparaissent dans le Nouveau Testament. Ici ces mots paraissent presque comme un refrain ou la clôture de l’enveloppe. Voir le commentaire à Joël 2.10.
