Chaldean

The name that is transliterated as “Chaldean” in English means “astrologer,” “wanderers.” (Source: Cornwall / Smith 1997 )

In Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) it is translated with the sign that combines “Mesopotamia” (see here) and “spreading out,” since the Chaldeans originated in southern Mesopotamia and spread out from there. (Source: Missão Kophós )

Following are a number of back-translations as well as a sample translation for translators of Jeremiah 37:8:

  • Kupsabiny: “So the people of Babylon will come back and fight against this city and capture (it) and then set fire to it to destroy it.” (Source: Kupsabiny Back Translation)
  • Hiligaynon: “Then those whose-from-Babilonia will-return to this city. They will-capture it and then burn.” (Source: Hiligaynon Back Translation)

Translation commentary on Jeremiah 37:8

And is more naturally “Then.” But it can also be natural to drop it.

Burn it with fire is unnecessarily redundant (see 34.2); New American Bible has “destroy it with fire,” while New Living Translation has “burn it to the ground,” and Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch, Good News Translation, and others have “burn it down.”
