Caleb

The term that is transliterated as “Caleb” in English is translated in American Sign Language with one variation of the sign for “watch,” a reference to the fact that Caleb was one of the twelve who surveyed the Promised Land. Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 2:56

Caleb, because he testified in the assembly may be rendered “Caleb brought back a good report to the people of Israel” or even “Caleb told the people of Israel the truth” (Contemporary English Version). See Num 13–14.

Good News Bible could be somewhat improved for this verse by saying:

• Caleb brought back a good report to the people of Israel, and received a part of the land to [own and to] pass on to his descendants.
