SIL Translator’s Notes on Judges 9:6

9:6a Then all the leaders of Shechem and Beth-millo gathered beside the oak at the pillar in Shechem

All the people of Shechem town and Beth Millo town gathered at the great tree in Shechem near the pillar.
-or-
Then all the people of Shechem town and Beth Millo town came together. They gathered at the big tree of Shechem next to the standing stone.

9:6b and proceeded to make Abimelech their king.

There they proclaimed Abimelek king.
-or-
They made Abimelek be their king.

9:38a “Where is your gloating now?” Zebul replied.

Then Zebul said: “Now where are your (sing.) fine speeches?

Then Zebul replied, “All your big words are useless now.

9:38b “You said, ‘Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?’

You said, ‘Who is Abimelek that we (incl.) should let him be our ruler?’
-or-
You said, ‘Abimelek is nothing. We shouldn’t let him rule over us.’

9:38c Are these not the people you ridiculed?

Aren’t these men the ones you despised?
-or-
Now the people you said were nothing are coming here.

9:38d Go out now and fight them!”

Well get up, it’s time to go and fight them.”

Go and fight them.”

10:13a But you have forsaken Me and served other gods,

But you have abandoned me ⌊again⌋ to serve other gods,

10:13b so I will no longer save you.

13:4a Now please be careful not to drink wine or strong drink,

So do not drink wine or any drinks that have alcohol.

13:4b and not to eat anything unclean.

Do not eat anything ⌊the law says is⌋ unclean.

SIL Translator’s Notes on Judges 16:3

16:3a But Samson lay there only until midnight, when he got up,

But Samson only stayed ⌊with the woman⌋ until the middle of the night. Then he got up.

16:3b took hold of the doors of the city gate and both gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and all.

He took hold of the doors of the town gate and tore them out of the wall, with the wood at their edges. He tore out the whole thing, including the cross bar.

He tore the doors of the gate out of the wall, together with the two posts and the beam that locked the gate.

16:3c Then he put them on his shoulders

He lifted the doors onto his shoulders
