SIL Translator’s Notes on Joel 1:14

1:14a Consecrate a fast;

Announce (plur.) a sacred period of fasting.

Order (plur.) the people to fast in God’s honor/presence!

Set a time aside for God and tell the people not to eat ⌊to show that they repent.⌋

1:14b proclaim a solemn assembly!

Call (plur.) the people together for a holy/solemn assembly.

Call (plur.) the people together to pray to God.

Bring (plur.) the people together to ask God ⌊for help⌋ .

1:14c Gather the elders and all the residents of the land

2:26a You will have plenty to eat,

they jump upon/along the tops of the mountains.

2:5c like the crackling of fire consuming stubble,

They are as ⌊loud as⌋ a roaring fire that eats up dry grass.

sounding like a bushfire/wildfire burning the dry fields.

2:5d like a mighty army deployed for battle.

They are like a great army ready for battle.

3:16a The LORD will roar from Zion

3:16b and raise His voice from Jerusalem;

3:16c heaven and earth will tremble.

That day will be dreadful!

Oh! the day/time ⌊when Yahweh⌋ ⌊will judge the people⌋ will be horrifying.

1:15b For the Day of the LORD is near,

That day of Yahweh is coming soon,

when Yahweh ⌊will judge people⌋ is not far away.
-or-
That day/time is almost here,

1:15c and it will come as destruction from the Almighty.

and on that day ⌊Yahweh⌋ the Almighty will bring destruction/ruin.

A great destruction comes from ⌊him/God,⌋ the Powerful/Great One, upon us!

and then God the all-powerful will destroy ⌊our land⌋ .
