SIL Translator’s Notes on Joel 1:4

1:4a What the devouring locust has left,

Whatever ⌊green⌋ things/plants the first locust swarm did not eat,
-or-
The crops that remained after the first group/wave of locusts passed by,
-or-

⌊This is what happened:⌋ the grain that one multitude/cloud of locusts left behind,

1:4b the swarming locust has eaten;

were eaten up by the next locust swarm.
-or-
the second group/wave of locusts ate.
-or-
another multitude/cloud of locusts devoured/consumed.

1:4c what the swarming locust has left,

What that locust swarm did not eat,
-or-
The harvest/crops that the second group/wave of locusts did not eat,
-or-
The grain/crops that remained after this/that,

1:4d the young locust has eaten;

yet another locust swarm ate.
-or-
the third group/wave of locusts ate.
-or-
yet another multitude/cloud of locusts devoured/consumed.

1:4e and what the young locust has left,

And every ⌊green⌋ thing/plant that that locust swarm did not eat,

And whatever the third group/wave of locusts did not eat,

1:4f the destroying locust has eaten.

2:16a Gather the people,

Summon (plur.) all the people,
-or-
Gather (plur.) everyone together.
-or-
Ask/Tell (plur.) everyone to assemble.

2:16b sanctify the congregation,

and purify (plur.) them for the gathering.
-or-
Prepare (plur.) them to worship Yahweh.
-or-
Make (plur.) them ready to meet/gather in Yahweh’s presence.

2:16c assemble the aged,

Bring (plur.) together the elders/leaders,
-or-
Call (plur.) together the older/mature people

2:16d gather the children,

gather (plur.) together the younger people,
-or-
and the children as well,

2:16e even those nursing at the breast.

and the little ones who are still nursing.
-or-
and ⌊even⌋ the babies.

2:16f Let the bridegroom leave his room,

Bridegrooms should/must leave their rooms ⌊and come⌋ ,

Come (plur.) out/away from your bedroom, you bridegrooms!

2:16g and the bride her chamber.

and brides must leave their rooms ⌊and join the meeting/assembly⌋ .

3:16a The LORD will roar from Zion

Yahweh will roar/shout ⌊loudly⌋ from Zion.

Yahweh will give a ⌊great/mighty⌋ shout/roar from ⌊Mount⌋ Zion,

3:16b and raise His voice from Jerusalem;

⌊Yes,⌋ he will give a ⌊loud/great⌋ call/shout from Jerusalem.

his voice booming/thundering from Jerusalem ⌊city⌋ .

3:16c heaven and earth will tremble.

Heaven and earth will shake ⌊at the/his sound/voice⌋ .

⌊His voice⌋ will shake the heavens and the earth.

3:16d But the LORD will be a refuge for His people,

But Yahweh will protect his people,

But the people who belong to Yahweh will find safety in him.

3:16e a stronghold for the people of Israel.

and ⌊he will be⌋ a strong/safe fortress for the people of Israel.”

⌊Yahweh will be⌋ like a strong wall ⌊to protect⌋ the people of Israel.”

1:15a Alas for the day!

That day will be dreadful!

That fearful/terrible time

Oh! the day/time ⌊when Yahweh⌋ ⌊will judge the people⌋ will be horrifying.

1:15b For the Day of the LORD is near,

That day of Yahweh is coming soon,
-or-
when Yahweh ⌊will judge people⌋ is not far away.
-or-
That day/time is almost here,

1:15c and it will come as destruction from the Almighty.

and on that day ⌊Yahweh⌋ the Almighty will bring destruction/ruin.

A great destruction comes from ⌊him/God,⌋ the Powerful/Great One, upon us!

and then God the all-powerful will destroy ⌊our land⌋ .

2:27a Then you will know that I am present in Israel

Then you (plur.) will know that I am among you (plur.) in Israel

2:27b and that I am the LORD your God,

and that I am Yahweh your (plur.) God.

⌊You (plur.) will know⌋ that I am your God, Yahweh,

2:27c and there is no other.

I and I alone!

2:27d My people will never again be put to shame.

2:6a Nations writhe in horror before them;

When the peoples/people see this army, they tremble/panic,

2:6b every face turns pale.

3:6a You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks,

You (plur.) sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greek people,

You (plur.) ⌊have captured/taken⌋ the people of Judah and Jerusalem ⌊city⌋ and sold them to the Greeks ⌊as slaves⌋.

3:6b to send them far from their homeland.
