SIL Translator’s Notes on Joel 3:16

3:16a The LORD will roar from Zion

Yahweh will roar/shout ⌊loudly⌋ from Zion.
-or-
Yahweh will give a ⌊great/mighty⌋ shout/roar from ⌊Mount⌋ Zion,

3:16b and raise His voice from Jerusalem;

⌊Yes,⌋ he will give a ⌊loud/great⌋ call/shout from Jerusalem.
-or-
his voice booming/thundering from Jerusalem ⌊city⌋ .

3:16c heaven and earth will tremble.

Heaven and earth will shake ⌊at the/his sound/voice⌋ .
-or-

⌊His voice⌋ will shake the heavens and the earth.

3:16d But the LORD will be a refuge for His people,

But Yahweh will protect his people,
-or-
But the people who belong to Yahweh will find safety in him.

3:16e a stronghold for the people of Israel.

and ⌊he will be⌋ a strong/safe fortress for the people of Israel.”

⌊Yahweh will be⌋ like a strong wall ⌊to protect⌋ the people of Israel.”

1:15a Alas for the day!

That day will be dreadful!

That fearful/terrible time

Oh! the day/time ⌊when Yahweh⌋ ⌊will judge the people⌋ will be horrifying.

1:15b For the Day of the LORD is near,

That day of Yahweh is coming soon,
-or-
when Yahweh ⌊will judge people⌋ is not far away.
-or-
That day/time is almost here,

1:15c and it will come as destruction from the Almighty.

and on that day ⌊Yahweh⌋ the Almighty will bring destruction/ruin.
-or-
A great destruction comes from ⌊him/God,⌋ the Powerful/Great One, upon us!
-or-
and then God the all-powerful will destroy ⌊our land⌋ .

2:27a Then you will know that I am present in Israel

Then you (plur.) will know that I am among you (plur.) in Israel

2:27b and that I am the LORD your God,

and that I am Yahweh your (plur.) God.

2:27c and there is no other.

I and I alone!

2:27d My people will never again be put to shame.

2:6a Nations writhe in horror before them;

When the peoples/people see this army, they tremble/panic,

3:6a You sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks,

3:6b to send them far from their homeland.

2:17a Let the priests who minister before the LORD

The priests, who work ⌊in the service of⌋ Yahweh,

2:17b weep between the portico and the altar,

should/must cry/wail ⌊as you stand in the temple⌋ between the porch and the altar.

⌊stand (plur.) ⌋ between the entrance ⌊to his house/temple⌋ and the altar/place for the sacrifice, and there lament/mourn (plur.).

2:17c saying, “Spare Your people, O LORD,

They should/must say, “Have (sing.) pity on your (sing.) people, Yahweh.

Pray (plur.) in this way: “Yahweh, be (sing.) merciful to ⌊us (excl.) ⌋ ! ⌊We (excl.) ⌋ are your (sing.) people!

2:17d and do not make Your heritage a reproach,

Do not allow (sing.) the nation that you own/possess to become a target for insults

Stop/Keep (sing.) ⌊foreign people⌋ from scorning/despising ⌊us (excl.),⌋ the people who belong to you (sing.) !

2:17e an object of scorn among the nations.

and/or a disgrace in front of people everywhere.

2:17d–e (combined)

Do not allow (sing.) foreign nations/peoples to scorn/ridicule us (excl.) , for we (excl.) belong to you (sing.) !

2:17f Why should they say among the peoples,

Why should those Gentiles/foreigners be able to say,

You (sing.) should not let them say to one another that

2:17g ‘Where is their God?’”
