SIL Translator’s Notes on Amos 2:13

2:13a Behold, I am about to crush you

(Revised Standard Version🙂 “Behold, I will press you down in your place,

So, now ⌊pay attention (plur.) !⌋ I will crush you down
-or-
Therefore look! I will crush you (plur.) ⌊to the ground⌋ .

2:13b in your place as with a cart full of grain.

like a cart full of ⌊harvested⌋ grain crushes ⌊what it rolls over⌋ .
-or-

⌊It will be⌋ like how a cart, which is loaded with ⌊harvested⌋ grain, crushes ⌊whatever its wheels roll over⌋ .

Section 5:1–17

The people of Israel will die because of their sins

5:1a Hear this word, O house of Israel,

⌊O nation of⌋ Israel, hear (plur.) these words ⌊about you⌋ .
-or-
⌊Now, you(plur) ⌋ Israelites, listen (plur.) ⌊carefully to me⌋ !
-or-
Get (plur.) this message clearly, ⌊people/family of⌋ Israel.

5:1b this lamentation I take up against you:

I am singing this sad song about you (plur.).
-or-
I, ⌊Amos,⌋ am singing a funeral song to cry/mourn for you (plur.).
-or-
Understand this song of mourning about you (plur.) ⌊which is sung by the prophet Amos⌋ .

6:6a You drink wine by the bowlful

You (plur.) drink ⌊lots of⌋ wine from full bowls
-or-
You drink ⌊large⌋ calabashes/pots filled with wine

6:6b and anoint yourselves with the finest oils,

and ⌊you (plur.) ⌋ use the best oils.
-or-
and ⌊you⌋ smear ⌊yourselves⌋ with the most expensive oils.

6:6c but you fail to grieve over the ruin of Joseph.

But you (plur.) do not mourn over the destruction of Israel.

But you (plur.) do not cry about how Israel will be destroyed.

8:7a The LORD has sworn by the Pride of Jacob:

Yahweh, the God of Jacob has promised in his name.

Yahweh, the God that the people of Israel are proud of, he has made a oath/vow using his name.

8:7b “I will never forget any of their deeds.

“I will never forget their ⌊evil deeds⌋ .

⌊He said,⌋ “I will truly punish every ⌊evil⌋ thing that the ⌊people of Israel⌋ did.

1:7a So I will send fire upon the walls of Gaza,

So I will cause a fire to burn the walls of Gaza ⌊city ⌋ ,

Therefore, the walls ⌊that surround the city of⌋ of Gaza, I will burn with fire.

1:7b to consume its citadels.

and it will destroy the strong walls around the city.
-or-

⌊That fire⌋ will burn the big walls which protect the city.

3:8a The lion has roared—who will not fear?

⌊When⌋ the lion roars, will not everyone be afraid? ⌊Yes!⌋

Everybody will be afraid ⌊when⌋ the lion roars.

3:8b The Lord GOD has spoken—who will not prophesy?

⌊When⌋ the Lord Yahweh speaks, who can keep from proclaiming his message? ⌊No one!⌋
-or-

⌊When⌋ Yahweh the Lord speaks ⌊to someone⌋ , that person must proclaim his word.

SIL Translator’s Notes on Amos 5:12

5:12a For I know that your transgressions are many

Certainly Yahweh knows all the crimes ⌊people have done⌋
-or-

⌊I know this⌋ because I know how many people you (plur.) have offended

5:12b and your sins are numerous.

and ⌊he knows⌋ all of their sins.
-or-
and ⌊I know⌋ how much you (plur.) have sinned.

5:12c You oppress the righteous

Some people are unkind to innocent/honest people,
-or-
You (plur.) are oppressors/enemies of good people

5:12d by taking bribes;

and ⌊they even⌋ accept money/bribes ⌊to do bad to them⌋ .
-or-
and ⌊you (plur.) are also⌋ bribe-takers.

5:12e you deprive the poor of justice in the gate.

⌊They do this⌋ in order to prevent them from having a fair trial.
-or-

⌊You (plur.) ⌋ stop poor people from being judged fairly in court.

7:3a So the LORD relented from this plan.

Therefore Yahweh changed his mind.
-or-

⌊Because of what Amos said,⌋ Yahweh decided not to do ⌊what he had said⌋ .

7:3b “It will not happen,” He said.

“This will not take place,” Yahweh said.
-or-
Yahweh said, “I will not send ⌊the locusts to destroy the place⌋ .”
