SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 10:28

10:28a But if someone tells you,

However, if/suppose someone should say to you (plur.) :

10:28b “This food was offered to idols,”

“This food was sacrificed to an idol,”
-or-
“This is meat that worshipers have dedicated to an idol,”

10:28c then do not eat it,

then you (plur.) should not eat it,
-or-
then, in that case, I advise you not to eat that food.

10:28d for the sake of the one who told you

both because of the person who said that
-or-
In that way you (plur.) will be considerate of the person who informed you,

10:28e and for the sake of conscience—

and because in that person’s heart it is a sin.
-or-
and ⌊you (plur.) will not⌋ make them upset because they think you are doing wrong.

11:27a Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner

(Good News Translation) It follows that if one of you eats the Lord’s bread or drinks from his cup in a way that dishonors him,

So anyone who eats the bread or drinks ⌊wine⌋ from the Lord’s cup in a way that is not right/proper
-or-
So you must eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in the proper way.

11:27b will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.

is sinning and they look down on the body and blood of the Lord.
-or-
Those who do not do this disrespect the Lord’s body and his blood.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 12:25

12:25a so that there should be no division in the body,

in order that the body should not be divided/split up,

⌊God has done this⌋ so that the body ⌊parts⌋ will not divide/split ⌊into factions⌋.

12:25b but that its members should have mutual concern for one another.

but that its parts should care about one another equally.

Instead they will all help each other in the same way.

14:13 Therefore, the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret.

So then, someone who speaks in an unknown tongue must pray for ⌊the ability⌋ to explain ⌊what he means⌋.

So, people who speak in unknown/miraculous languages should ask God to help them say ⌊it⌋ again in words that others can understand.

15:37a And what you sow

the plant that grows is not the same shape as what you planted.

15:37c but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or something else.

from the seeds you (plur.) sowed, whether they are wheat seeds or some other seed/grain/crop.

For ⌊you plant⌋ only a seed, of wheat for example.

16:11a No one, then, should treat him with contempt.

So no one should treat him as unimportant.

16:11b Send him on his way in peace so that he can return to me,

Support (plur.) him on his journey so that he can come back to me, and send him with your blessing of peace.

When he comes back to me give him the things he needs for his trip, and give him your blessing as he leaves.

16:11c for I am expecting him along with the brothers.

I am waiting for him ⌊to come back⌋ with the ⌊other⌋ believers.

1:19a For it is written:

1:19b “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;

“I will ruin/destroy the wise thoughts of wise people.

“I will show how worthless/foolish are the clever thoughts of clever people.

1:19c the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

I will ruin the intelligent/clever plans of smart people.”
-or-
I will show/prove that the clever ideas of clever people are not successful.”
