SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 2:8

2:8a None of the rulers of this age understood it.

No leader here on earth understood God’s plan,
-or-
Not one of the rulers in this present age knew about God’s clever/wise plan.

2:8b For if they had,

because if they had understood what God was doing,
-or-

⌊It is clear that they did not understand his plan,⌋ because if they had known what God was planning to do,

2:8c they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

they would not have crucified the Lord, who is glorious/great.
-or-
they would not have nailed our glorious/powerful Lord to a cross to kill him.

The Corinthians should respect Paul as a servant of Christ

4:1a So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ

(New Revised Standard Version) Think of us in this way, as servants of Christ

As for us (excl.) ⌊teachers/evangelists⌋, you should think about us (excl.) like this: We (excl.) are Christ’s helpers/servants,
-or-
You should consider us (excl.) ⌊Christian workers⌋ to be ⌊merely⌋ people who serve Christ.

4:1b and stewards of the mysteries of God.

and God has made us (excl.) guardians/trustees of the things/matters that previously he did not make known to anyone.
-or-
God has sent us (excl.) to tell people his plans/teachings that he has never told anyone before.

5:12a What business of mine is it to judge those outside the church?

Do I have the authority to judge people who are not a part of the church? ⌊Not at all!⌋
-or-
It is not my responsibility to condemn people who are not believers.
-or-
⌊I did not tell you not to associate with unbelievers who are immoral,⌋ for it is not my/our (incl.) job to decide what to do with people who do not belong to our (incl.) group.

5:12b Are you not to judge those inside?

But certainly you should judge the people who are a part of your church group, shouldn’t you?
-or-
But you should judge/discipline any people who belong to your church group ⌊who do the sinful things which I just mentioned.⌋

7:11a But if she does, she must remain unmarried

And even if she does divorce/leave him, then she should remain/stay unmarried,

And if you ever do go away from your husband, then do not marry anyone else.

7:11b or else be reconciled to her husband.

or else she should go back to live with her husband.

If you do not want to stay single/unmarried, then return to your husband and be his wife again.

7:11c And a husband must not divorce his wife.

And if you are a husband, you must not divorce/leave your wife.

And you husbands, do not send your wives away.

9:22a To the weak I became weak, to win the weak.

When I am with poor people, I make myself poor, so that by my help, the poor people will follow ⌊Christ⌋.

9:22b I have become all things to all people

When I am with people of any kind, I become like them,

9:22c so that by all possible means I might save some.

10:27a If an unbeliever invites you to a meal

If an unbeliever invites you (plur.) ⌊to his home⌋ for a meal,

Suppose a nonbeliever asks you (plur.) to come ⌊to his house⌋ to eat.

10:27b and you want to go,

and you (plur.) want to go/accept,
-or-
If you (plur.) decide to go,

10:27c eat anything set before you

eat whatever food he serves you (plur.).
-or-
you may eat whatever he gives you.

10:27d without raising questions of conscience.

You (plur.) do not need to ask where it came from, so that your hearts do not condemn you.
-or-
It is not necessary to ask yourself whether it is right or wrong ⌊for a believer to eat it⌋.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 11:26

11:26a For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup,

For every time you (plur.) eat this bread and drink from this cup

⌊The Lord said this to show that⌋, each time we (incl.) eat this ⌊communion⌋ bread and drink this ⌊communion⌋ wine

11:26b you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

until he comes back you (plur.) declare/announce to others that the Lord has died.
