SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 2:12

2:12a As Elisha watched, he cried out,

Elisha saw this and shouted out,

-or-

Elisha watched this happen. He kept exclaiming,

2:12b “My father, my father,

“My father! My father!

-or-

“My leader/teacher! My leader/teacher!

2:12c the chariots and horsemen of Israel!”

The war carts and war horses of Israel ⌊have gone/left⌋ !”

-or-

You (sing.) were like⌋ chariots and horses ⌊defending/protecting⌋ Israel!”

2:12d And he saw Elijah no more.

And he did not see Elijah any more.

-or-

Elisha never saw Elijah again.

2:12e So taking hold of his own clothes, he tore them in two.

So Elisha grabbed his ⌊own⌋ robe and tore it in two.

-or-

He took his ⌊own⌋ clothing and tore it ⌊to show he was sad⌋ .
