Translation commentary on Isaiah 28:8

This verse continues to describe the drunken behavior of the religious leaders, concentrating on the vomiting that results from it.

For all tables are full of vomit, no place is without filthiness: The Hebrew particle ki rendered For is probably an emphatic marker here. New Jerusalem Bible renders it “Yes” and New Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh has “Yea,” but most versions leave it implied. All tables refers to the places where the priests and prophets are eating and drinking. For tables see the comments on 21.5. Tables are full of vomit means they are covered with vomit. Versions differ on where to divide these two lines. They literally read “For all tables are full of vomit filthiness no place.” Revised Standard Version breaks the first line before the word “filthiness” (also Good News Translation, New International Version, Revised English Bible). New Revised Standard Version makes the break after it, so it has “All tables are covered with filthy vomit; no place is clean” (similarly New Jerusalem Bible, New American Bible, New Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh). Either reading is acceptable.

Translation examples for this verse are:

• Indeed, every table is covered with vomit,
filth is everywhere.

• All tables are covered with filthy vomit,
no space is left clean.
