Following are a number of back-translations as well as a sample translation for translators of Ezekiel 30:7:

  • Kupsabiny: “Those areas will be made weak/desolate more than the desolate lands and their cities will become deserted.” (Source: Kupsabiny Back Translation)
  • Hiligaynon: “Egipto will-become [the] most-desolate of all the nations, and her towns will-become [the] most-ruined of all the cities.” (Source: Hiligaynon Back Translation)
  • English: “Egypt will become the most deserted country in the world,

Translation commentary on Ezekiel 30:7

And she shall be desolated in the midst of desolated countries means Egypt will be “deserted” (Contemporary English Version, New Century Version) and “empty” (New International Reader’s Version) because of its total destruction. Instead of the pronoun she, the Hebrew text has “they.” The plural pronoun in Hebrew refers to the Egyptians, but their land is in focus here, so Revised Standard Version‘s rendering is appropriate.
