Translation commentary on 2 Kings 15:7

This verse continues the summary formula used to conclude the account of a king’s reign. In the year that King Uzziah/Azariah died, the prophet Isaiah had the vision in which God called him to be a prophet (see Isa 6.1).

Slept with his fathers: See the comments on 1 Kgs 1.21 and 2.10.

They buried him with his fathers: See the comments on 1 Kgs 14.31. Since Uzziah’s fathers were also kings, Good News Translation says “was buried in the royal burial ground.”

The city of David: See the comments at 1 Kgs 2.10.

Reigned in his stead: See the comments on 1 Kgs 11.43 and 2 Kgs 8.24.

15:7a And Azariah rested with his fathers

Uzziah went to be with his ⌊royal⌋ grandfathers/ancestors.

15:7b and was buried near them in the City of David.

His body was buried near/with them in the City of David.

and his people buried him with the ⌊other kings of Judah⌋ in ⌊an area of Jerusalem called⌋ the City of David.

15:7c And his son Jotham reigned in his place.
