Judah, Judea

The name that is transliterated as “Judah” or “Judea” in English (referring to the son of Jacob, the tribe, and the territory) is translated in Spanish Sign Language as “lion” (referring to Genesis 49:9 and Revelation 5:5). Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 13:30

This is the tomb which he built in Modein; it remains to this day: To this day refers to the time of the author, not the present time. We do not know how long this memorial stood. It is not in fact there today, but we do know it was still there as late as the fourth century a.d. An alternative model for this verse is:

• This tomb, which Simon built at Modein, is still there [or, is still standing] today.
