Translation commentary on 1 Maccabees 12:48

But when Jonathan entered Ptolemais, the men of Ptolemais closed the gates and seized him, and all who had entered with him they killed with the sword: There is a lot of action in this verse. Jonathan’s mistake was underestimating the hostility the people of Ptolemais had for the Jews (see 1Macc 5.15). During the times he had been there before, he had been under protected circumstances, and obviously thought he was so this time. But Trypho and his men simply stepped aside and let the townspeople take care of the situation. When Jonathan and his men were inside the city, the townsmen locked the gates and killed them—all except Jonathan. He was seized (Good News Bible “arrested”). For killed with the sword, see the comments on 1Macc 5.28. We may modify Good News Bible‘s model for this verse by saying:

• But when Jonathan entered Ptolemais, the people of the city locked the gates. They took Jonathan prisoner, and killed all the men who had come with him.
