And Ahio, Shashak, and Jeremoth: The relationship of these three names to the context is uncertain. There are two major views:

• (1) Some versions place the names in verse 14 with those in verses 15 and 16 as descendants of Beriah (so Good News Translation, New International Version, New Living Translation, New Century Version, Revised English Bible, Bible en français courant, Traduction œcuménique de la Bible, Reina-Valera revisada, Parola Del Signore: La Bibbia in Lingua Corrente, Nova Tradução na Linguagem de Hoje, La Sainte Bible: La version Etablie par les moines de Maredsous). The end of verse 16 identifies the men of verses 14-16 as the sons of Beriah, so some versions move this information from the end of verse 16 to the beginning of verse 14 (so Good News Translation, New Century Version, Bible en français courant, Parola Del Signore: La Bibbia in Lingua Corrente, Nova Tradução na Linguagem de Hoje).

• (2) Other translations, however, place a period at the end of verse 14, indicating that these three sons are sons of Elpaal (Revised Standard Version/New Revised Standard Version). According to the paragraphing in Biblia Dios Habla Hoy, which reads “and their brothers Shashak and Jeroham,” Shashak and Jeroham were also sons of Elpaal.

New Jerusalem Bible takes the name Ahio not as a person’s name but as a Hebrew word meaning “his brother,” so it begins this verse with “His brother was Shashak” (similarly Bible de Jérusalem). New Jerusalem Bible then takes Jeremoth along with the names in verses 15-16 as sons of Beriah. Since descendants of Shashak and Jeremoth are listed in the following verses, but none are for Ahio, this seems to suggest that New Jerusalem Bible may be correct in understanding Ahio as something other than a proper name.

An American Translation, following some Septuagint manuscripts, has “and their brothers were Shashak and Jeremoth” (similarly American Bible, El libro del Pueblo de Dios, Klein, Knoppers, Osty-Trinquet). That is, Shashak and Jeremoth were brothers (or kinsmen) of Beriah and Shema (verse 13).

New American Bible, following some Greek manuscripts, translates this verse as “Their brethren were Elpaal, Shashak, and Jeremoth” (similarly Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch, Luther).
