Following are a number of back-translations as well as a sample translation for translators of 1 Chronicles 2:49:

  • Kupsabiny: “That wife also bore Shaaph who was the father of Madmannah and Shevah who was the father of Machbenah and Gibea. Caleb also had a daughter who was called Achsah.” (Source: Kupsabiny Back Translation)
  • Newari: “She also gave birth to Shaaph, the father of Madmannah, and to Sheva, the father of Macbenah and Gibea. Caleb’s daughter was Acsah.” (Source: Newari Back Translation)
  • Hiligaynon: “Shaaf (the father of Madmana), and Sheva (the father of Macbena and Gibea). The daughter of Caleb was Acsa.” (Source: Hiligaynon Back Translation)

Translation commentary on 1 Chronicles 2:49

She also bore …: Also renders the common Hebrew conjunction (literally “And”). New Living Translation and International Children’s Bible translate it in the same way. For the sake of logic and smooth-flowing English, Good News Translation begins with the transition word “Later” (also Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch).

Since Madmannah, Machbenah, and Gibe-a are almost certainly the names of places and not persons, the expression the father of is better rendered “the founder of” (Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch; similarly Good News Translation, Nova Tradução na Linguagem de Hoje).

And the daughter of Caleb was Achsah: Good News Translation makes this sentence a separate paragraph and introduces it with the words “In addition” (similarly Die Bibel im heutigen Deutsch, Nova Tradução na Linguagem de Hoje). This may be wise in other languages since the mention of a daughter is a new and different thought.
