name (of God) (Japanese honorifics)

Like a number of other East Asian languages, Japanese uses a complex system of honorifics, i.e. a system where a number of different levels of politeness are expressed in language via words, word forms or grammatical constructs. These can range from addressing someone or referring to someone with contempt (very informal) to expressing the highest level of reference (as used in addressing or referring to God) or any number of levels in-between.

One way to do this is through the usage (or a lack) of an honorific prefix as shown here in the widely-used Japanese Shinkaiyaku (新改訳) Bible of 2017. When the referent is God, the “divine” honorific prefix mi- (御 or み) can be used, as in mi-na (御名) or “name (of God)” in the referenced verses.

Translation commentary on 1 Chronicles 17:24

And thy name will be established and magnified for ever: This verse begins in Hebrew with the common conjunction, which Revised Standard Version translates and. New Revised Standard Version says “Thus,” which better expresses the relationship of this verse to the preceding one. As earlier in this chapter, name here refers to reputation, so Good News Translation says “fame,” and Moffatt has “renown.” The Hebrew verbs translated will be established and magnified are understood by some scholars as expressing a simple future tense (so Revised Standard Version, Good News Translation). But the form of these Hebrew verbs may also be understood as expressing a wish or desire; for example, New Living Translation renders this whole clause as “And may your name be established and honored forever” (similarly Revised English Bible, Bible en français courant, Parole de Vie, Nouvelle version Segond révisée, La Bible du Semeur, Traduction œcuménique de la Bible). Either interpretation is possible and either fits the context.

Saying, ‘The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, is Israel’s God’: Revised Standard Version follows the Hebrew by not having a subject for the verb saying, but it may be better in many languages to translate “as people say.” For The LORD of hosts, see the comments on 1 Chr 11.9. Instead of the direct quotation within the larger quotation, some languages may prefer to render this one indirectly. This may be done by saying something like “and people will forever affirm/recognize that you, LORD of hosts, are the God of the people of Israel.”

And the house of thy servant David will be established before thee: In some languages the house of thy servant David may be better translated “the dynasty of me, your servant” or “I, your servant, my dynasty.”
