SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 16:11

16:11a As soon as Zimri began to reign and was seated on the throne,

As soon as he began to rule and sat ⌊firmly⌋ on the throne,

At the very beginning of his reign,

16:11b he struck down the entire household of Baasha.

he killed everybody in Baasha’s family.
-or-
Zimri had all the ⌊male⌋ members of Baasha’s family killed.

16:11c He did not leave a single male, whether a kinsman or friend.

17:9a “Get up and go to Zarephath of Sidon, and stay there.

“Go (sing) right away to Zarephath ⌊town⌋, near Sidon ⌊city⌋, and live (sing) there.
-or-
“Go (sing) now to ⌊the town of⌋ Zarephath that belongs to ⌊the city⌋ Sidon, and live (sing) there ⌊temporarily⌋.

17:9b Behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”

I have instructed a woman there, a widow, to provide you (sing) with food.”
-or-
I have commanded a widow ⌊who lives⌋ in that town/village to feed/support you (sing).”

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 18:17

18:17a When Ahab saw Elijah, he said to him,

As soon as he saw Elijah, Ahab said to him,
-or-
When he saw Elijah, he immediately exclaimed,

18:17b “Is that you, O troubler of Israel?”

“Is it you (sing) , the one who brings trouble on Israel?”
-or-
“So there you (sing) are, the man who has caused/made so many problems for Israel!”

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 19:3

19:3a And Elijah was afraid and ran for his life.

The New International Version translates the Septuagint here. The Masoretic Text reads, “Elijah saw/understood ⌊the situation/danger⌋ and went for his life.” Only the vowels are different.

Then Elijah was afraid for his life, so he fled.
-or-
Then Elijah became frightened and left that place in order to save his life.
-or-
Elijah ⌊quickly⌋ left because he was afraid that he would be killed.

19:3b When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there,

He arrived at Beersheba, a town in Judah, and had his servant stay/remain there.

He left his servant behind in the town of Beersheba in Judah when he passed through.
-or-
He went with his servant to Beersheba town in Judah. He told his servant to stay there

20:14a “By whom?” Ahab asked.

Ahab asked, “Who will do it?”

Then King Ahab asked ⌊the man of God,⌋ “Through/By whom will ⌊Yahweh⌋ do this?”

20:14b And the prophet replied, “This is what the LORD says:

The prophet answered, “Yahweh says this,

The man of God said to Ahab, “Yahweh says that

20:14c ‘By the young officers of the district governors.’”

‘It/Victory will be by/through the young men/soldiers of the officials of the provinces.’”

the young guards/soldiers who serve the provincial/district governors will defeat it/them.”

20:14d “Who will start the battle?” asked Ahab.

Then Ahab asked, “Who will begin the battle?”

21:3a But Naboth replied,

21:3b “The LORD forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers.”

“May Yahweh keep/prevent me from giving/selling you (sing) the inheritance that I received from my ancestors!”

“May Yahweh help me! I will never give you that ⌊vineyard⌋ ! I inherited it from my ancestors!”
-or-
He declared in the name of Yahweh that he would never let Ahab have his family land.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 22:6

22:6a So the king of Israel assembled the prophets, about four hundred men,

So the king of Israel called the prophets together. About 400 of them came to him.

Then Ahab, the king of Israel, summoned the men who ⌊claimed to⌋ speak for God. There were about four hundred (400) of them.

Then Ahab called/sent for the four hundred prophets ⌊of Israel⌋. They arrived and

22:6b and asked them, “Should I go to war against Ramoth-gilead, or should I refrain?”

The king said to them, “Should I attack Ramoth Gilead, or not?”

He asked them, “⌊Do you advise that⌋ I should go to fight for Ramoth Gilead? Yes or no?”

Ahab asked them whether or not it would be good to attack Ramoth city.

22:6c “Go up,” they replied, “and the Lord will deliver it into the hand of the king.”

They said/replied, “Go, (sing) your Majesty! The Lord will give you power/victory over it.”

They told him, “Yes, go. (sing) The Lord ⌊God⌋ will allow you to capture/conquer it.”

They told him that ⌊if he went/attacked,⌋ the Lord would bring the city back into his power. It would be good to go/attack.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 22:38

22:38a And the chariot was washed at the pool of Samaria where the prostitutes bathed,

They washed ⌊the blood⌋ off the chariot at the pool of Samaria where the immoral women bathed.
-or-
They washed/cleaned ⌊the king’s blood⌋ from the war cart/wagon at the pool of Samaria. It was a pool where prostitutes bathed.

22:38b and the dogs licked up Ahab’s blood, according to the word that the LORD had spoken.

The dogs licked up his blood, just as the message of Yahweh had said.
-or-
Then what Yahweh had said took place. Dogs licked up the blood of King Ahab.
