SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 1:18

1:18 But now, behold, Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, did not know it.

But instead it is Adonijah who is king! He has not even let you (sing) know anything about it, my lord and king.

“But now,” Bathsheba told him, “Adonijah has become the new king without informing you, Your Majesty.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 1:50

1:50 But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, got up and went to take hold of the horns of the altar.

And Adonijah became afraid of Solomon, so he went to the altar and grabbed hold of the horns ⌊on/at its corners⌋.
-or-
Adonijah was/felt afraid of ⌊what⌋ Solomon ⌊might do to him⌋. So he went ⌊for refuge/protection⌋ to ⌊the holy tent/place⌋ where the table of sacrifice was, and he held onto it by ⌊two of⌋ its corners.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 2:29

2:29a It was reported to King Solomon: “Joab has fled to the tent of the LORD and is now beside the altar.”

⌊They/Men⌋ told King Solomon that Joab had run to ⌊find refuge in⌋ Yahweh’s tent and that he was there, next to the altar.

King Solomon learned/heard that Joab had gone to find refuge/safety by the platform/place of sacrifice in Yahweh’s tent.

2:29b So Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, saying, “Go, strike him down!”

Then Solomon gave the order/command to Jehoiada’s son Benaiah, “Go (sing) and kill him/Joab!”

So he sent Benaiah the son of Jehoida to kill him.

3:15a Then Solomon awoke, and indeed it had been a dream.

Solomon woke up. It had been a dream.

3:15b So he returned to Jerusalem,

He went back ⌊from Gibeon to the city of⌋ Jerusalem.

There he stood before the ⌊wooden⌋ box ⌊that contained/held⌋ Yahweh’s covenant ⌊with Israel⌋.

4:19b including the territories of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan,

This was where Sihon, king of the people of Amor, and Og, king of the people of Bashan, had ⌊once⌋ ruled.

Gilead was the land where King Sihon had ruled the Amorite people and King Og had ruled the people of Bashan.

4:19c There was also one governor in the land of Judah.

(Literal): And there was one governor in the land.

There was also one governor/overseer in charge of the land ⌊of Judah⌋.

One person was also responsible for Judah.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 5:17

5:17a And the king commanded them to quarry large, costly stones

King ⌊Solomon⌋ gave the order and the men/workers went to the quarries/mines. They began to get/remove heavy blocks of quality stone.

King ⌊Solomon⌋ ordered ⌊his workers⌋ to find/gather large rocks of good quality from the ⌊open-pit⌋ mines.

5:17b to lay the foundation of the temple with dressed stones.

⌊They needed these blocks⌋ to form/shape them into foundation stones for ⌊God’s⌋ house.

⌊Solomon/He wanted⌋ these rocks to be cut/shaped and placed/used as a base for the temple.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 6:31

6:31b Solomon constructed doors of olive wood with five-sided doorposts.

The meaning of the Hebrew phrase that the New International Version translates as “one fifth of the width of the sanctuary” is uncertain. The Meaning Lines here follow the New International Version, but you may wish to follow your national version.

Solomon placed doors made of olive wood. These doors were one fifth of the width of the holy/sacred place.
-or-
Solomon ⌊had his workmen⌋ make ⌊two⌋ doors out of wood from the olive tree. The doorway extended/stretched over one fifth of the wall.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 7:25

7:25a The Sea stood on twelve oxen,

The/This Sea rested/lay on top of twelve ⌊statues that looked like⌋ bulls/oxen.

It had a base ⌊in the form⌋ of twelve large horned cattle/animals.

7:25b three facing north, three facing west, three facing south, and three facing east.

Three ⌊of the bulls/oxen⌋ faced north, three faced west, another three faced south, and the other three faced east.

Three horned cattle/animals looked/pointed toward the north, three looked/pointed toward the south, three looked/pointed toward the setting sun, and three looked/pointed toward the rising sun.

7:25c The Sea rested on them, with all their hindquarters toward the center.

The Sea was/lay on top of the bulls/oxen. Their backsides were ⌊positioned/placed toward the middle⌋ ⌊of the tank⌋.

The animal figures faced outwards ⌊around the tub’s base⌋ and supported/held the water basin/container.
