SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 22:12

22:12a And all the prophets were prophesying the same,

All the prophets prophesied like that.

The prophets were all speaking similar messages.

The rest of the prophets spoke in the same way.

22:12b saying, “Go up to Ramoth-gilead and prosper,

They said, “Go (sing) to Ramoth Gilead and succeed.

They said, “Attack ⌊the city of⌋ Ramoth! Enjoy your victory!
-or-
They said that the king ⌊of Israel⌋ should attack Ramoth in Gilead. They assured him that he would succeed

22:12c for the LORD will deliver it into the hand of the king.”

Yahweh will give you victory over it.”

Yahweh has given you the city!”

because Yahweh would allow/cause him to defeat/conquer it.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 1:6

1:6a (His father had never once reprimanded him by saying, “Why do you act this way?”

⌊This all happened because⌋ his father ⌊David⌋ had never corrected/disciplined him/Adonijah. His father had never asked him, “Why are you (sing) acting in this ⌊bad/wrong⌋ way?”
-or-

⌊Adonijah acted like this because⌋ his father, ⌊King David,⌋ had never questioned/criticized any of his actions.

1:6b Adonijah was also very handsome, born next after Absalom.)

⌊It was also true that⌋ he/Adonijah was pleasing/beautiful to look at and was the king’s oldest ⌊living/surviving⌋ son since Absalom ⌊had died⌋.

Adonijah was next in line to the throne after ⌊the dead/deceased⌋ Absalom, and a good-looking young man.

1:5-6 (reordered)

Absalom had a handsome younger brother named Adonijah, whose mother was ⌊a woman named⌋ Haggith. At this time Adonijah announced/declared his ambition to become king. He assembled chariots and chariot drivers along with fifty supporters/guards to accompany/escort him. He acted like this because his father ⌊King David⌋ had never told him he was wrong or criticized anything he did.

1:38a Then Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with the Cherethites and Pelethites, went down

Then the priest Zadok, the prophet Nathan, Jehoiada’s son Benaiah, and the Kerethites and Pelethites, ⌊the king’s guards,⌋ all went to Solomon.

Then Zadok, Nathan, Benaiah and ⌊the royal bodyguards called⌋ the Kerethites and the Pelethites went and met Solomon,

1:38b and set Solomon on King David’s mule,

They gave him King David’s mule to ride

So Adonijah said, “Please ask King Solomon ⌊to do me a favor/kindness⌋. He will not deny/refuse ⌊his own mother⌋.

So he asked that Bathsheba make a request to King Solomon for him. He thought that the king could/would not refuse a request from ⌊his own mother⌋.

2:17b Let him give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.”

Ask (sing) him to let me take/have Abishag of Shunem as my wife.”

Say (sing) to the king, ‘Please allow (sing) Adonijah to marry Abishag the Shunammite.’ ”

He wanted the king to give him Abishag, ⌊the girl/maiden⌋ from Shunem ⌊town⌋, to be his wife.

Adonijah said to her, “Please ask(incl.) King Solomon to give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife. He will not refuse you.”

3:3a And Solomon loved the LORD

Solomon loved Yahweh.

Solomon was devoted to Yahweh,

3:3b and walked in the statutes of his father David,

He obeyed the commands his father David had given him,

so he lived by the orders/rules that his father ⌊King⌋ David had given him.

3:3c except that he sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.

but he kept offering sacrifices and burning incense at the local/hilltop shrines.

However, he did continue to offer/sacrifice ⌊animals⌋ and ⌊sweet-smelling⌋ spices at various/different places of worship.

4:7a Solomon had twelve governors over all Israel

Solomon chose/appointed 12 governors/overseers over all ⌊the land/people of⌋ Israel.

Solomon ⌊also⌋ placed twelve (12) men/officers in charge of the twelve (12) regions in Israel.

4:7b to provide food for the king and his household.

These governors/overseers had to provide food for the king and the members of his household.

⌊Their job/duty was⌋ to support the king and all his dependents by giving them food.

4:7c Each one would arrange provisions for one month of the year,

Each governor/overseer was responsible for providing this food for one month each year.

Each officer had/received this job/duty for one month per year.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 5:5

5:5a So behold, I plan to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God,

So I am planning to build a house ⌊to honor⌋ the name of Yahweh my God.

So now I want to build a temple where ⌊people can worship⌋ Yahweh my/our (excl.) God.

5:5b according to what the LORD said to my father David:

This is what Yahweh said to my father David ⌊that I should/would do⌋. He said,

This is just what Yahweh told my father David ⌊was going to happen⌋. Yahweh said that

5:5c ‘I will put your son on your throne in your place,

‘I will make your (sing) son succeed you as king.

he was going to make ⌊me⌋ the new king after David had died. ⌊I,⌋ the son of David, would be the one

5:5d and he will build the house for My Name.’

It is he who will build the temple ⌊to honor⌋ my name.’
