SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 1:2

1:2a So his servants said to him,

So his servants told him,

1:2b “Let us search for a young virgin for our lord the king, to attend to him and care for him

“We (excl.) should search for a young girl, a maiden, who will wait on ⌊you (sing) ⌋, Your Majesty, and be your caretaker/nurse.

they find a young unmarried girl/woman to stay with the king and look after him.

1:2c and lie by his side to keep him warm.”

1:34a There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet are to anoint him king over Israel.

There the priest Zadok, with the prophet Nathan, must anoint him ⌊with oil⌋ to make him the new king of Israel.

In that place ⌊God’s⌋ priest Zadok and the prophet Nathan are to pour/drip the sacred oil on him. ⌊In this way they will declare/make him⌋ king over ⌊the nation/people of⌋ Israel.

1:34b You are to blow the ram’s horn and declare, ‘Long live King Solomon!’

Then sound (plur) the horns and say/shout, ‘Live a long life, King Solomon!’

Then let the trumpets sound/ring out! Announce that Solomon is your (plur) ⌊new⌋ king!

Section 2:13-25

King Solomon had his brother Adonijah killed

2:13a Now Adonijah son of Haggith went to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon,

Then ⌊David’s son⌋ Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, went to ⌊speak with⌋ Solomon’s mother, Bathsheba.
-or-
Adonijah, the son of ⌊David and⌋ Haggith, visited/approached Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon.
-or-
⌊David’s oldest son⌋ Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, made a visit to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon.

2:13b and she asked, “Do you come in peace?”

Bathsheba asked him, “Have you (sing) come ⌊to me⌋ in peace?”

“Is this a visit of friendship/goodwill?” Bathsheba asked Adonijah.

Bathsheba asked him if he had come as a friend.

2:13c “Yes, in peace,” he replied.

Adonijah replied, “Yes, in peace.”

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 2:45

2:45a But King Solomon will be blessed

But ⌊I⌋, King Solomon, am blessed ⌊by Yahweh⌋.

But me, the king, Yahweh will bless,

2:45b and David’s throne will remain secure before the LORD forever.”

David’s family line will secure/firmly reign over Israel before Yahweh forever.”

and he will secure/keep the kingdom for David and all his future descendants to rule.”

4:3a Elihoreph and Ahijah, the sons of Shisha, were secretaries;

Elihoreph and Ahijah, Shisha’s sons, were the court/official secretaries/scribes.
-or-
Shisha’s sons named Elihoreph and Ahijah were learned men who wrote things down for the king.

4:3b Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder;

The exact meaning of the Hebrew word that the New International Version translates as “recorder” is not certain.

Jehoshaphat, Ahilud’s son, was the spokesman/herald.

Ahilud’s son named Jehoshaphat was in charge of giving the king’s messages.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 5:1

5:1a Now when Hiram king of Tyre heard that Solomon had been anointed king in his father’s place,

Hiram, the king of Tyre, heard/learned that ⌊the people of Israel⌋ had anointed Solomon as their king in place of his father David.
-or-
At this time Hiram was the ruler of Tyre ⌊city⌋. ⌊His men⌋ told him, “David ⌊the king of Israel⌋ has died and his son Solomon has been appointed/chosen to rule.”

5:1b he sent envoys to Solomon;

So Hiram sent ⌊some of⌋ his men/servants to Solomon,

So Hiram sent his official representatives to ⌊speak/meet with⌋ Solomon.

5:1c for Hiram had always been a friend of David.

because he had always been David’s ally/friend.

6:15a He lined the interior walls with cedar paneling

He covered its inner walls with cedar boards.

He had ⌊them⌋ put cedar wood planking on the inside walls of the temple.

6:15b from the floor of the temple to the ceiling,

They were paneled/lined from the floor to the ceiling.
-or-
They lined/paneled the hall from floor to ceiling with cedar wood.

6:15a-b (reordered)

Solomon covered the inside of the temple walls with cedar panels, from floor to ceiling.

6:15c and he covered the floor with cypress boards.

He covered the temple floor with cypress/juniper boards.

He had ⌊his workmen/craftsmen cover⌋ the floor with planks made from cypress wood.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Kings 7:9

7:9a All these buildings were constructed with costly stones,

They made all these buildings from/using the best stones.

They constructed everything from high-quality stone blocks.

7:9b cut to size and trimmed with saws inside and out

These stones had been ⌊carefully⌋ cut to size and made smooth on both sides.
-or-
They cut the stone blocks to the right sizes and trimmed their inner and outer sides.

7:9c from the foundation to the eaves,

⌊These blocks were used⌋ from top to bottom ⌊of the buildings⌋,

⌊These stone blocks made up the buildings⌋ from floor to ceiling,

7:9d and from the outside to the great courtyard

The meaning of the phrase “from the outside to the great courtyard” is not certain. Translators may wish to follow their majority-language version.

and from the outside/exterior ⌊halls⌋ to the great/large courtyard.

and all the way to the great court.

7:9a-d (reordered)

Solomon had all these buildings constructed out of fine/quality stone. The stone blocks were cut carefully and smoothed/trimmed along their ⌊exposed⌋ edges/faces. From the outer ⌊porches⌋ to the ⌊wall around⌋ the large/central court, they were all made from these stones from top to bottom.
