SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 11:2

Section 11:2–16

Men and women should dress appropriately to worship God

11:2a Now I commend you for remembering me in everything

I commend you (plur.) that you remember everything I ⌊said to you⌋

You are doing well to remember all that I ⌊told you⌋

11:2b and for maintaining the traditions,

and that you (plur.) are maintaining/keeping the tradition
-or-
and you are doing well to follow the teachings

11:2c just as I passed them on to you.

as I handed it down to you (plur.).

exactly as I taught them to you.

11:34a If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home,

If anyone is hungry, he should have something to eat at his own house

People who are too hungry ⌊to wait⌋ should ⌊first⌋ eat at their own home.

11:34b so that when you come together it will not result in judgment.

in order that your (plur.) meetings may not result in ⌊the Lord⌋ judging you.
-or-
Then your meetings will not cause ⌊God⌋ to punish you.

11:34c And when I come, I will give instructions about the remaining matters.

And when I come I will tell you more ⌊about this⌋.

There are some other matters I will teach you about. I will do that when I come ⌊to you⌋.

Section 13:1–13

Love endures forever

13:1a If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels,

If I speak in the languages of people and the languages of angels,

Somebody may speak in tongues like people speak and even like angels.

13:1b but have not love,

but do not love ⌊other people⌋,
-or-
But if that person does not have a heart of love,

13:1c I am only a ringing gong or a clanging cymbal.

I am like a noisy gong or a crashing cymbal.
-or-
their speech is ⌊meaningless⌋ like a person banging on a gong or a cymbal.

14:20a Brothers, stop thinking like children.

Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children think.

Fellow believers, do not keep on being childish in the way you think ⌊about speaking in tongues⌋.

14:20b In regard to evil be infants,

Be as free from evil as infants,

About evil deeds, you should behave like infants.

14:20c but in your thinking be mature.

but think like adults.

but in the way you think, be as wise/thoughtful as grown ups.

15:12a But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead,

Because we (excl.) preach that Christ has come back to life,

15:12b how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?

how can some of you (plur.) say that dead people do not rise?

so you surely cannot say that the dead will not come alive again.

15:44a It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body.

The body that is buried is part of this world, but when ⌊God⌋ raises it from the dead, it will be above/beyond this world.

Our (incl.) bodies now are for living in this world, but when they rise they will be for living in heaven.

15:44b If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

Because we (incl.) have a body that is part of this world, we will also have a body that is above/beyond this world.
-or-
Now we have bodies for living in this world, then we will have bodies for living in heaven.

16:18a For they refreshed my spirit and yours as well.

For they gave rest to my spirit and to yours (plur.) also.

They encouraged me, just as they also encouraged you.

16:18b Show your appreciation, therefore, to such men.

So show (plur.) respect to people like this.

Give honor to all people who do like they do.

1:26a Brothers, consider the time of your calling:

My brothers and sisters, think about ⌊your status in this world⌋ when God called you ⌊to become his people/believers⌋.

My Christian friends, remember ⌊what your status/position in life was⌋ when God called/summoned you ⌊to follow Christ⌋.
-or-
My fellow believers ⌊in Christ⌋, remember ⌊what you were like⌋ when God called/invited you ⌊to belong to/follow him⌋.

1:26b Not many of you were wise by human standards;

Not many of you were what most people consider wise.
-or-
According to human standards, not many of you were clever/wise.
-or-
The people of this world thought/considered very few of you to be wise people.

1:26c not many were powerful;

Not many of you were powerful people.
-or-
Not many of you held power over other people.
-or-
Only a few of you had positions of power/influence.

1:26d not many were of noble birth.

Not many of you were born into the higher classes of society.
-or-
Only a few of you were born into important/noble families.
