SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 16:7

16:7a For I do not want to see you now only in passing;

I do not want to come and see you (plur.) now for just a brief time.
-or-
I want to visit you for a long time, longer than I am able to stay right now.

16:7b I hope to spend some time with you, if the Lord permits.

I want to stay with you (plur.) for a long time, if the Lord allows me to.
-or-
If the Lord will let me, I hope to have a long visit.

1:15 so no one can say that you were baptized into my name.

so nobody can now say that I baptized you ⌊to be my followers/disciples⌋, using my own name.

As a result, no one there/in Corinth can say, “Paul baptized us (excl.) using his own name, ⌊so we are his followers/disciples⌋.”

2:16a “For who has known the mind of the Lord,

Because, “Can anyone know what is in the Lord’s mind?

⌊What I have said is true⌋ because ⌊it agrees with what was written long ago in God’s Book:⌋ “No one has ever known what the Lord’s thoughts/plans are

2:16b so as to instruct Him?”

Can anyone teach/advise the Lord?”

And so no one can tell/teach him ⌊what his thoughts should be about something⌋.”

2:16c But we have the mind of Christ.

But we (incl.) understand what is in Christ’s mind.

But we (incl.) ⌊believers⌋, do think the same way that Christ does.

4:9a For it seems to me that

4:9b God has displayed us apostles at the end of the procession,

It is as if God has caused us (excl.) apostles to appear as the most despised/insignificant of all people.

4:9c like prisoners appointed for death.

4:9d We have become a spectacle to the whole world, to angels as well as to men.

6:7a The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means that you are thoroughly defeated already.

You are arguing with one another in front of judges. That by itself shows that you have totally failed ⌊to live/behave like God’s people⌋.

⌊Even if the judge decides you are right,⌋ in God’s eyes you are wrong for taking a fellow believer to court.
-or-
To go to law against another believer is in itself a ⌊moral⌋ failure/defeat.

6:7b Why not rather be wronged?

Why not rather suffer/accept the wrong/injustice?
-or-
It would be better to let the other believer wrong you.
-or-
If another Christian has done something wrong to you, ⌊do not go to a judge to accuse him⌋. It is better to do nothing.

6:7c Why not rather be cheated?

Why not rather suffer/accept the loss?
-or-
It would be better to let the other believer cheat/swindle you.
-or-
Or if another Christian has taken/stolen something from you, ⌊do not go to a judge to accuse him⌋. Just let it be that way.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 7:19

7:19a Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing.

It does not matter if a person is circumcised or not circumcised.
-or-
We cannot please God more by getting circumcised. And we cannot please him more by not getting circumcised.
-or-
It does not matter to God whether a man is circumcised or uncircumcised.

7:19b Keeping God’s commandments is what counts.

What is important is that we (incl.) do what God tells us.
-or-
We can please God only by doing/obeying what he commands us to do.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 8:11

8:11 So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge.

So by knowing so much you (sing.) will ruin a weak believer, a person for whom Christ died.

In that way, you will harm/damage a believer who is weak because of what you know. And Christ died for this person.

10:3 They all ate the same spiritual food

They all ate ⌊from⌋ the same spiritual/miraculous food.
