SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 8:7

8:7a But not everyone has this knowledge.

But not all ⌊believers⌋ know this.
-or-
However, some ⌊believers⌋ do not yet understand that idols are nothing.
-or-
But ⌊remember:⌋ some ⌊among you (plur.)⌋ think that idols are alive and powerful.

8:7b Some people are still so accustomed to idols

Some of them worshiped idols for so long
-or-
Serving idols was an important/large part of their life ⌊before they believed in Christ⌋.

8:7c that they eat such food

that if/when they eat food that has been sacrificed to idols,
-or-
So when they go to a feast ⌊in the idol’s temple/house⌋,

8:7d as if it were sacrificed to an idol.

⌊they consider that⌋ as taking part in a sacrifice to a real god.
-or-

⌊they think⌋ they are eating sacred food that has been given to a god who is alive and powerful.

8:7e And since their conscience is weak,

And so, because their understanding/awareness of right and wrong is not strong ⌊enough to cause them to do what is right⌋,
-or-
They think this is wrong but they are weak and do it anyway,

8:7f it is defiled.

their conscience becomes unclean/impure.
-or-
so they feel guilty/shame before God.

9:26a Therefore I do not run aimlessly;

So, then I do not run like someone who does not know where he is going.

For that reason, ⌊I live my life with a clear purpose⌋ like a runner who runs for the finish line.

9:26b I do not fight like I am beating the air.

And I do not fight as though I were a boxer hitting ⌊only⌋ air.
-or-
I do not live ⌊aimlessly⌋ like a fighter who ⌊just⌋ punches the air.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 10:31

10:31a So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do,

So now, whether you (plur.) eat something or drink something, or whatever else you (plur.) may do,

In conclusion, when you eat, and when you drink, and in everything you do,

10:31b do it all to the glory of God.

do everything to glorify/honor God.
-or-
always act in such a way that people ⌊who see you⌋ will praise/honor God.

11:30a That is why many among you are weak and sick,

This is the reason many of you (plur.) are weak or sick

11:30b and a number of you have fallen asleep.

12:28a And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles,

And in the church God chose in the first place the apostles.

Among the believers, there are responsibilities that God gave to people. The most important of these is to be God’s representative.

12:28b second prophets, third teachers,

In the second place he chose prophets and in the third place teachers.
-or-
The second most important are those who speak messages from God. The third most important are those who teach God’s word.

12:28c then workers of miracles, and those with gifts of healing,

Then he chose those who can perform miracles and those with the ability to heal others.

Then there are people who can do amazing things, and also those with the ability to remove sickness.

12:28d helping, administration,

He chose those who can help others, those who can look after ⌊the church⌋,
-or-
There are those who can help others, and those with the ability to organize ⌊the affairs of the believers⌋,

12:28e and various tongues.

and those who can speak in various unknown tongues.

and those who can speak in unknown/miraculous languages.

14:16a Otherwise, if you speak a blessing in spirit,

If you (sing.) praise ⌊God⌋ ⌊in unknown tongues⌋ with your spirit,

If you ⌊use new languages⌋ to praise ⌊God⌋ from your heart/liver,

14:16b how can someone who is uninstructed say “Amen” to your thanksgiving,

how can someone who does not understand say “Amen” to your thanksgiving prayer ⌊to God⌋ ?
-or-
those who do not understand will not be able to agree when you thank ⌊God⌋.

14:16c since he does not know what you are saying?

For he will not know what you (sing.) are saying.
-or-
They will have no idea what you have said.

15:8 And last of all He appeared to me also, as to one of untimely birth.

(New International Version) and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

And at the end he appeared to me, as to someone born in the wrong way.

And finally I also saw him, even though I was not worthy to see him.

15:40a There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies.

And there also are forms in the heavens, and there are forms on earth.

The things in the sky are beautiful in one way

15:40c and the splendor of the earthly bodies is of another.
