SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 15:3

15:3a For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance:

For ⌊the teaching⌋ that other people taught me, I taught you (plur.) as most important:
-or-
For I told you about ⌊the events⌋ that other people told me. These things are very important:

15:3b that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

Christ died on account of our (incl.) sins, as the Scriptures say/foretell.
-or-
Christ died because of our sins, which is what the Scriptures said would happen.

16:9a because a great door for effective work has opened to me,

A wide door of opportunity has opened up for me to do good work,

I will stay here because there are many people who want to believe in the word I preach.

16:9b even though many oppose me.

(New International Version) and there are many who oppose me.

and many people are against me.

Also there are many people who do not want me to preach.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 1:17

1:17a For Christ did not send me to baptize,

For the work that Christ sent me out to do is not baptizing believers.
-or-

⌊I did not baptize many believers.⌋ ⌊That is⌋ because baptizing believers is not ⌊the main work⌋ that Christ gave me to do ⌊as his apostle⌋.

1:17b but to preach the gospel,

Rather, ⌊he sent me⌋ to preach the good news.

Instead, my main work as Christ’s apostle is to tell people God’s/the gospel message about Christ.

1:17c not with words of wisdom,

I do not preach the Gospel using eloquent words of ⌊human⌋ wisdom,
-or-

⌊I do not use⌋ the clever/persuasive speech of ⌊human⌋ wisdom ⌊to preach the Gospel⌋.

1:17d lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

so that ⌊the death of⌋ Christ on the cross would not lose its power/impact.
-or-
I do not want to rob ⌊the message about⌋ the cross of Christ of its power ⌊to save people/you⌋.
-or-
I do not want to cause ⌊the message of⌋ Christ’s death on the cross to be ineffective/powerless/useless ⌊to those listening⌋.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 3:2

3:2a I gave you milk,

I gave you ⌊only⌋ milk ⌊to drink⌋.
-or-
At that time I taught you only the beginning things from God’s message, because you were like a baby that can only nurse/breastfeed.
-or-
At that time I taught you only the simple things from God’s message, as a mother gives babies only milk to drink.

3:2b not solid food,

I did not give/feed you solid/adult food,
-or-

⌊I did⌋ not ⌊talk to you⌋ about things that are difficult to understand. Such teachings are like food for adults.

3:2c for you were not yet ready for solid food.

because you were not yet able to receive/accept such food/teaching.
-or-
And at that time you were not ready to learn/understand them.

3:2d In fact, you are still not ready,

But even now, you are still not ready/able ⌊to receive/understand such food/teaching⌋.
-or-
But ⌊what is bad is⌋, even after all this time, you still are not ready ⌊to learn about those things which are for mature believers.⌋

4:11a To this very hour we are hungry and thirsty,

Right up to the present time we (excl.) often do not have enough to eat and drink

Even up to now, we (excl.) often lack food and water.

4:11b we are poorly clothed,

and are poorly clothed.

Our (excl.) clothes are very worn/poor.

4:11c we are brutally treated,

And/Also people ⌊often⌋ hit/beat us (excl.).
-or-
People treat us (excl.) badly/roughly.

4:11d we are homeless.

We (excl.) have no home of our own.
-or-
We (excl.) do not have our own home.

SIL Translator’s Notes on 1 Corinthians 6:9

6:9a Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God?

Have you forgotten that evil people will not possess/receive the kingdom of God?
-or-
Let me remind you that people who live sinful/bad lives will not be able to live in God’s kingdom.
-or-
You know very well that wrongdoers/evildoers will not be among God’s people when he rules/reigns as king.

6:9b Do not be deceived:

Make no mistake.
-or-
Do not let anyone deceive you.
-or-
Stop believing lies.

6:9c Neither the sexually immoral,

As for people who commit sex sins,
-or-
Specifically, I am talking about immoral people,

6:9d nor idolaters,

and people who worship idols,
-or-
people who follow/obey other gods,

6:9e nor adulterers,

people who commit adultery,
-or-
people who are unfaithful to their spouses,

6:9f nor men who submit to or perform homosexual acts,

men who allow other men to do sexually shameful things with them, or who do these things to other men,

homosexuals,

7:21a Were you a slave when you were called?

⌊For example,⌋ if you were a slave when God called you ⌊to become one of his people⌋,
-or-

⌊What I mean is this:⌋ Some of you were slaves when you obeyed/accepted God’s call/invitation to follow Christ.

7:21b Do not let it concern you—

you must not feel bad about that.
-or-
If that is true for you, do not worry about it.

7:21c but if you can gain your freedom, take the opportunity.

However, if you are able to become a free person, then do that.
-or-
But if your master lets you go free, then go.
