perilupos egenēthē ‘he became very sad.’ egenēthē is best understood as ingressive aorist. perilupos.
ēn gar plousios sphodra ‘for he was very rich.’ sphodra ‘very’ modifies plousios though placed after it.
Translation:
He was very rich, or, ‘he was a very rich man.’
