Section 5:1-27
Elisha healed a foreign military commander
5:1a Now Naaman, the commander of the army of the king of Aram,
Aram was an ancient kingdom centered around Damascus in the southern part of what is now Syria.
The commander/general of the army of the king of Aram was a man called Naaman.
-or-
⌊At this time⌋ the army of the king of Aram/Syria was led/commanded by a man named Naaman.
-or-
The king of Aram⌊ ⌋ had placed/made a man called Naaman in charge of his army.
5:1b was a great man in his master’s sight and highly regarded,
His master ⌊the king⌋ respected and honored him,
-or-
He was highly valued/regarded by his lord ⌊the king of Aram/Syria⌋ and given much honor/favor.
-or-
He thought very well of Naaman. He honored him
5:1c for through him the LORD had given victory to Aram.
because with him as leader/commander Yahweh had made Aram victorious/successful ⌊over its enemies⌋ .

⌊The king respected him⌋ because Yahweh had caused him to win ⌊many⌋ battles for Aram/Syria.

because Yahweh had allowed Naaman to lead ⌊the army of⌋ Aram to victory ⌊over its enemies⌋ .
5:1d And he was a mighty man of valor,
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase that the Berean Standard Bible translates as “a mighty man of valor” can include both physical power and political influence.
Naaman was a great man and warrior,
-or-
Naaman was a powerful/important man.
5:1e but he was a leper.
but he had the leprosy ⌊skin disease⌋ .
-or-
However, he had ⌊a bad/serious skin disease called⌋ leprosy.
5:1a-e (reordered)
The army of Aram was led by a great warrior named Naaman. The king of Aram thought very highly of him/Naaman. The king gave him many honors, because under his leadership Yahweh had caused the army of Aram to defeat its enemies. But Naaman had the leprosy disease.

At this time the commander of the army of the king of Aram was named Naaman. The king of Aram valued and honored him, because Yahweh had willed/chosen to give the army of Aram victory through him. Naaman was powerful and successful, but he had a skin disease.
