4:39a One of them went out to the field to gather herbs,
One of the prophets went into the open country to gather herbs ⌊for the stew⌋ .
-or-
One of the prophets went to pick some ⌊savory/flavorful⌋ leaves/greens out in the countryside.
4:39b and he found a wild vine
He found a vine ⌊growing⌋ wild there.
-or-
⌊There⌋ he saw a wild/native vine ⌊bearing/with hard-skinned fruit⌋ .
4:39c from which he gathered as many wild gourds as his garment could hold.
He picked many of its gourds and filled ⌊the folds of⌋ his robe with them.
-or-
He gathered/put in ⌊the folds of⌋ his robe/clothes as much of the fruit of that plant as he could carry .
4:39d Then he came back and cut them up into the pot of stew,
He went back ⌊to the other prophets⌋ . Then he sliced the gourds and put them into the pot of stew.
-or-
He carried them back, chopped them up, and added them to the soup.
4:39e though no one knew what they were.
None of them knew what they ⌊actually/really⌋ were.

Nobody ⌊there⌋ realized/recognized what ⌊kind of vegetable/fruit⌋ they were.
