4:40a And they poured it out for the men to eat,
The stew was poured ⌊into bowls⌋ for the men ⌊to eat⌋ .

⌊After cooking⌋ the soup, they served some to ⌊each of⌋ the prophets.
-or-
Each of the prophets received some of the stew/soup to eat.
4:40b but when they tasted the stew
But when they started eating it,
-or-
But as soon as they tasted it
-or-
But at the first taste/bite/mouthful
4:40c they cried out, “There is death in the pot, O man of God!”
they called out, “Man of God, this pot of stew tastes like a deadly poison!”
-or-
they shouted, “Prophet, the stew in ⌊that⌋ pot will kill ⌊us (incl.) ⌋ !”
-or-
they shouted to Elisha that the food in the pot was going to kill/poison them.
4:40d And they could not eat it.
And they were unable to eat the stew/soup.
-or-
They refused to eat any more.
-or-
They said, “We (incl.) cannot eat that ⌊poisonous stuff⌋ !”
