SIL Translator’s Notes on 2 Kings 2:9

2:9a After they had crossed over,

When they reached the other side,

-or-

They got/came to the far bank ⌊of the Jordan River⌋ .

2:9b Elijah said to Elisha,

Elijah said to Elisha,

-or-

Elijah asked Elisha,

2:9c “Tell me, what can I do for you

“Tell (sing.) me, what can I do to help you

-or-

“What would you like me to do for you (sing.)

2:9d before I am taken away from you?”

before I am taken away from you (sing.) ?”

-or-

before ⌊Yahweh⌋ takes me away?”

2:9c-d (reordered)

“⌊Yahweh⌋ is about to take me away from you. So what do you want me to do to help you before that happens?”

2:9e “Please, let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.

“Let me receive a double share of your spirit ⌊to continue your work⌋ ,” Elisha replied.

-or-

And Elisha replied, “Please let me be your successor and receive from you a double share of your spirit.”

-or-

Elisha answered. “Please give me a large/generous inheritance of your ⌊power⌋ ⌊to do your work after you⌋ .”

2:9b-e

Elijah asked Elisha what he wanted Elijah to do for him before ⌊Yahweh⌋ took Elijah away from him. And Elisha asked Elijah to pass on to him a double share of his power.
